In 1986, Arthur Kaufman left a large law firm in Manhattan to join three colleagues and start a boutique labor and employment law firm on Long Island. His intention was to improve the quality of life for his family and to create something he could be proud of. Over the course of 30 years, KDV has grown from a four-person labor and employment law boutique into a nationwide law firm with marquee private and insurance clients in the United States, Bermuda and United Kingdom.
Since day one, KDV has established a reputation for first-class legal representation and client service, and has been the standard in which our attorneys operate today. The first two clients ever brought on by Arthur Kaufman – Constellation Brands and We Transport – are still with the firm. It is this model of consistency that has allowed the firm to grow every year since its inception.
“I am heartened today to see that our vision and hard work has paid off, both for our clients and for the lawyers who call KDV home,” said Arthur R. Kaufman, founder of the firm.
Today, the firm is known for two major practices – Labor & Employment and Insurance Coverage & Litigation – and has expanded its practices to Professional Liability, Construction, Financial Services, Cyber Security, Maritime and Shared Economy. KDV has strategically grown its practice to 9 offices nationwide, following clients to emerging marketplaces across the country. Our attorneys apply their diverse background as legal practitioners and litigators on all areas of law to provide clients the most innovative and cost-effective solutions.
With over 100 attorneys and counting, KDV boasts a roster of versatile lawyers that ensure each client matter receives the finest of the firm’s collective competencies and capabilities.
Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck (“KDV”) is committed to promoting diversity through active recruitment, development, and retention of individuals with distinct backgrounds. Our wide-ranging talent pool of lawyers and staff merge diverse experiences, rich cultures, and varied educational achievements. As we grow, we remain committed to our mission by continually searching for ways to broaden and enhance our diversity-initiative efforts.
Our firm takes active steps to improve its diversity within both our offices and our external networks. In May of 2016, KDV was ranked 28th in Law360’s “Top 100 Firms for Minority Attorneys.” The survey considers firms’ minority representation at the partner and non-partner levels and its total number of minority attorneys. Law360 ranked firms by examining a variety of factors, including the percentage of partners, both equity and non-equity, who are minorities; the percentage of associate-level attorneys who are minorities; and the total number of minority attorneys at the firm.
“As KDV celebrates its 30th anniversary, it is very gratifying to see the results of the firm’s diversity efforts, it has become part of our fabric and culture and we strive to improve every day.” said Michael A. Kaufman, co-managing partner of KDV. “We value diverse opinions around our tables and we know our clients do as well. We will continue our efforts to recruit and retain diverse attorneys.”
KDV continues to raise awareness of the benefits of a diverse workforce and provides an environment allowing each team member to succeed. KDV attorneys are actively involved with the Hispanic National Bar Association, Asian American Bar Association, Korean American Lawyers Association, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, to name a few.
Within KDV, a number of our attorneys are fluent in a variety of languages, including: Spanish, Chinese, Persian, French, Dari, Russian, Farsi and Tagalog.
KDV is comprised of highly-talented and diverse individuals that foster an environment of hard work, commitment and dedication to its ongoing mission of maintaining a diverse work environment. KDV is a place where your talents can flourish and evolve, and where you can perform at the highest levels. It’s an opportunity to work with enthusiastic, devoted staff who look forward to meeting the dynamic challenges we encounter each day.
At KDV, we value teamwork above all else. As a result, we have worked hard to establish a culture that promotes collaboration and emphasizes the importance of mentoring our junior associates. As part of our commitment to the development of our attorneys, KDV’s partners are required to dedicate a specific amount of hours annually to “hands on” associate mentoring.
Our firm takes pride in being innovative and progressive. One critical example is KDV’s dedication of resources to ensure the firm runs as efficiently as possible. Unlike many firms our size, we offer our attorneys and staff access to internal professional services departments (Human Resources, Marketing and IT), which strengthens our commitment to clients and the long-term growth and success of our firm.
We are proud to offer competitive compensation with the opportunity for an annual bonus. KDV also provides impressive benefits, including: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term and short-term disability insurance, healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts, and a 401K program. Our employees enjoy nine federal holidays plus two floating holidays to be used at their discretion. KDV champions the need for rest and relaxation in order to maintain a healthy staff.

I have been working at Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck full-time (More than a year)
KDV has been a great place to work. I started my career with KDV right out of law school. As many first year associates, I was worried about finding a firm that was willing to really take the time to teach me the fundamentals of being a successful associate and just generally grooming me to be a great attorney. I could not have asked for more from KDV and will soon celebrate my 2-year anniversary with the firm.
On day one, I was paired with a mentor who has educated me not only on substantive law, but also on many things you don't learn in law school such as what to do at court appearances, the basics of client communication, how to handle the stresses that come along with "learning by doing" as a new attorney, and the ins-and-outs of networking and business development.
I have also had the opportunity to work in essentially all of the practice areas at KDV - something that is not common as a first-year associate - which has made me a versatile attorney. All of the partners and senior associates are extremely knowledgeable in their area of practice and are extremely helpful. Most of the partners and senior associates have an "open door policy" providing for an environment that fosters education and growth.
Of course, you have to work hard and produce quality work product, but you are recognized for the work that you do. In addition to the knowledgeable attorneys, KDV also has a friendly and collegiate environment and has a a fun, energetic atmosphere with great work-life balance, and offers competitive salary, bonuses, and benefits.
All in all, KDV does strive to select high-caliber individuals who share a commitment to quality work product. In return, KDV recognizes and rewards its associates for their efforts and contributions. If you work hard and produce quality work product, you will thrive at KDV and will enjoy working here.
All organizations that are growing are not perfect but the attempt is there to make the firm a better place each day to work.
High billable hour requirement, but with the workload you are given, you will not have trouble meeting the requirement and still maintaining work-life balance.
Advice to Management
Continue the great efforts of improving communication around the firm and continue to keep employee morale up with team building events.
I applied online. I interviewed at Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck.
It was very organized and professional. The call was to the point, and an email clearly stated who to ask for. Interviewer was polite and enthusiastic. Met the other member of my prospective team, which allowed me to view the culture within the department.
