I have been working at Kickstarter full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - There are exciting changes in development on the product side, as well as the branding side.

    - Engineering teams here are collaborative, and pair programming is encouraged. Biweekly investment days are also great for balancing product work, and learning new technologies, or paying down technical debt.

    - The PBC culture for what it's worth, does help frame the work in a way that is meaningful and moral. Sometimes it does work against conventional business logic, which means you have to think a bit harder about how what you're working on impacts the mission.

    - Great office, perks, and benefits. The office also hosts events such as indie movie screenings, and other creator events on a regular basis.

    Cons

    - New essence team structure sometimes leads to redundant explorations / repeat work. Size of the company (around 140+ at the moment) makes coordination manageable, but it would be great to find ways to reduce this.

    - Parts of the codebase haven't been rewritten in years, and given the size of the team it's hard to support all parts of it.

    - There is uncertainty on what's next in the company's evolution, and that leads to some anxiety.

    Advice to Management

    - Allow teams to be autonomous / and trust people's best judgment. Given a company this size, hire the best people and allow them to do their best work.

    - This year is potentially a turning point for Kickstarter, and it'll be interesting to see how the company evolves.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Kickstarter in January 2018.

    Interview

I applied online, then was contacted by email to schedule a phone interview. They said they would get back to me by sometime the following week (presumably meaning "if we are interested in hiring you," since I didn't hear back).

    Interview Questions

    • What is your philosophy when it comes to working in community support?   Answer Question
    • Unfortunately we can't make everyone we talk to happy. Tell me about a time when you handled a difficult client or customer. If you don't have a relevant experience, tell me how you would handle it.   Answer Question
