Our vision is that all children have the skills they need to be ready for success in school and life. Making this vision a reality is one of the greatest and most important challenges any community faces. Research shows that low income preschoolers are up to two years behind their upper income peers in early language and math development. It’s a primary reason why over half of California’s 3rd graders are not proficient in either language or math.

THE CHALLENGE

How do we help our children close the gap before starting school?

That is why we are working with experts from some of the best research universities in the world, including the University of Chicago, UC Berkeley, and Stanford. Our goal is to understand what the most critical skills are that children need to learn, how teachers and parents can impart these skills, and then measure our success by looking at the growth each child makes throughout their preschool experience. This is our continuous quality improvement system, which is outlined in the circle below. Ultimately we want to know how our children do in 3rd grade, which is the first year California tests student proficiency in language and math. We want Kidango kids to show how it can be done!

“At Kidango, we want every staff member to feel like they are part of a family. We are constantly seeking out new ways to ensure every team member feels appreciated, empowered, and inspired by their work. “

–Scott Moore, Executive Director

Most of our staff work in small teams, so it’s easy to forget that Kidango is over 500 strong. We are a results-oriented, open-door organization that constantly seeks new ways to delight and inspire our team members. Most recently, we held our third annual Wellness Day – a day-long all-staff retreat focused on ensuring all team members have the tools they need to do well physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially.

I have been working at Kidango full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A rewarding nonprofit to work at! This organization not only deeply care about making a difference in the lives of low-income families, but also cares about the teachers and staff that make it happen. Teaching staff also have the opportunity to grow professionally through the Education Advancement Program. Every year, we have received consistent pay increases company-wide. We also get to all participate in a fun annual event called Wellness Day, where we get to do Zumba, PaintNite, etc. with our fellow colleagues.

    Cons

We're pretty big and spread out in the Bay Area so it's hard to meet everyone on a regular basis.

    Advice to Management

Continue to host morale-boosting activities, such as Wellness Day and GEM. I can really see the difference in the work culture ever since we started doing these!

    Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Kidango (Fremont, CA) in June 2018.

    Interview

I submitted an application via an external jobs site and was contacted by a Kidango HR rep asking me to resubmit via their website. After a short screening call, I had a 1:1 interview with the VP I'd be reporting to. A few weeks after that, I had an interview at the main office which included the same VP, the CEO and a few other staff. I also met the other members of the Comms team. For the second interview, I was asked to bring a plan and press release of how to promote a bill Kidango had sponsored being signed into law.
