I worked at Kinder Morgan full-time (More than 8 years)
Strong compensation and lots of opportunities to advance. I was able to increase my salary over $50K in just 8 years with the company (started as entry-level pay straight out of college) . Benefits package was strong (especially health and 401K) while I was there (much better than what I have now). Was able to work independently and faced new challenges every day. Never got boring or slow.
Very high expectations on performance. In management positions you were expected to work long hours, weekends, and be accessible 24/7. Work-life balance was not great. Constant changes to the organizational structure and management made it difficult to achieve goals. Changes were very frequent. Employees were sometimes on a short lease and there was a tendency to fire or discipline rather than coach/mentor. Culture was created by fear and intimidation. High turnover rate.
Advice to Management
Slow down and don't be pressured to change for the sake of change. Focus on quality of work, not quantity. Increase positive recognition to improve work-life balance and help reduce turnover.
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Kinder Morgan (Salt Lake City, UT) in October 2015.
Applied online, heard from a VPs assistant a week later about scheduling an interview. Interviewers were easy to relate/talk to. Asked a lot about PM experience, and a lot about personal project management preferences. First round was an hour phone call with managers, second round was about an hour's phone call with those managers and their director.
