Kokua is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month alongside schools, communities, students and families across the country. This month gives us the chance to honor the history and culture of generations of people who came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. As an estimated 28% of K-12 students in our country identify as Hispanic or LatinX, we encourage educators to take the time to explore and amplify the influence of Hispanic and Latin American heritage, and incorporate these celebrations into your time with students over the next few weeks. You might see student work lining the halls, or follow lesson plans that celebrate and educate about the amazing contributions Hispanic and LatinX people have made to our country. Kokua is a Hawaiian word that means ‘to come together to fulfill a need’ - regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or identity. At Kokua, we believe that diversity enriches our life experience and perspective, and we all benefit when we come together from different backgrounds for a common purpose.
