Dr. Gibbs Emergency Department, Norwalk Community Hospital
Norwalk Community Hospital is a great place to provide emergency care because it’s a community hospital where patients aren’t just a number. We can provide that extra bit of personalized medical attention. We have a bit more time to keep that patient connection and provide the more personalized medicine that helps patient feel more at ease, even during an emergency situation. We are small, but we do big things.
Philip, RN, Emergency Department, Norwalk Community Hospital
At Norwalk Community Hospital ER, we never know the type of patients that will come through the door — from chest pain to orthopedic conditions to power tool injuries. We have to be ready for anything and shift gears quickly. It can be a high stress environment here, so we must share knowledge to provide the best quality care. Collaboration and teamwork also helps us to keep each other calm and in check. This teamwork helps one to build self-control and breathe when a challenging patient comes in.
Thelma, Quality Improvement, Norwalk Community Hospital
Norwalk Community Hospital has been a great place to work because I’ve been able to contribute to overall hospital quality, from updated rooms to new equipment to healthcare processes.
Since starting here five years ago, management has been very receptive to my quality improvement suggestions. We don’t settle for “it’s always been this way,” we reach for “what it could be." This dedication is what has brought our quality scores way up. It’s great to work in a place where you can make an impact on community perception and patient care processes.
I love when I get to talk to patients and help them to feel comfortable about making good decisions that improve their own care. We attend to patients the minute they hit the front door, to when they are discharged. It’s great to see when patients notice the difference.
Nenita, RN, Critical Care/ICU, Norwalk Community Hospital
I’ve worked at Norwalk Community Hospital now for 20 years and it's my second home. I’ve enjoyed mentoring younger nurses in addition to helping critical patients get the most comprehensive care needed for their illness. When we get a patient with a challenging medical condition, we are able to quickly coordinate all the departments involved in care, from case management to social services to spiritual care.
The ICU is a great place to work for a newer nurse who is dedicated to achieving specialized education. A nurse with natural leadership and critical thinking skills also is a great fit for the ICU.
Once you have been an ICU nurse, it opens the door to many opportunities. But for me, this is exactly where I belong.
There is no greater experience than helping the sick, the shut in and the bereaved
When a family member looses a love one, and there are no words you can say, other than expressing your feelings and thoughts.
Advice to Management
Safety first always
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Los Angeles Community Hospitals (Los Angeles, CA) in June 2020.
Applied online, interviews 4 weeks later. Easy interview, 15 minutes. It was a one on one interview at the facility. Asked a few questions about you and then nursing fundamental questions as well.
