I have been working at METROPOLITAN AREA PLANNING COUNCIL (CTPS) full-time (More than 10 years)
No On-Call, Weekends, Holidays, Nights. 9am to 5pm IT job. No Overtime. This is for the most part unheard of in the IT industry. You do get a work / life balance. Management and employees are friendly, helpful, and supportive. It's like a big family. The work is great you can work in teams or independently! The benefits are great! The work is rewarding and challenging.
The ability to work from home is for the most part nonexistent, You get this benefit based on who you know or if your manager is supportive of it. This is a government agency so there is an old style way of thinking. The salary is lower than what the industry pays for all employees but the public sector does pay less than the private sector. The benefits and time off are great and the pension is outstanding. If you stay here long enough to retire you can retire comfortably without really living on a reduced fixed income. You can retire with up to 80% a year of the average salary of your highest earning 3 years pay until you die. The time off is also good if you have children or elderly parents. You also get flex-time so the core business hours are 10am - 3pm so you can work your schedule around this if you need to leave early or come in late. The work week is also 37.5 hours a week.
Advice to Management
Allow users to work at home periodically. Increase the raises, the raises are barely a cost of living raise. Salaries are not competitive with the industry. It's almost insulting!
