As a full-service, employee-owned consulting firm, MSA Professional Services (MSA) is dedicated to the sustainable development of communities. We achieve this by building honest, open relationships that go beyond the project to become a trusted source of expertise and support for immediate challenges and long-term goals. Big or small, we do whatever it takes to meet each need, working to make communities stronger in the process. Above all, MSA’s purpose is to enable people to positively impact the lives of others.
MSA’s roots reach back to the 1930s. Once a rural land survey company, our firm now consists of more than 350 engineers, architects, planners, funding experts, surveyors, GIS experts, landscape architects and environmental scientists. MSA excels at helping clients identify grant and funding sources and then delivering high quality, cost-effective solutions. Based in 16 offices across six states, our technical teams collaborate to assist communities throughout the United States.
We’re 100% employee-owned. What does that mean? Being invested on every level makes the relationships we build work—and last. When you join MSA, you join a team of owners committed to providing communities with efficient and innovative solutions to help them overcome each obstacle they face. We are proud of the reputation we have earned through professional performance and caliber of our employees, and we hope you'll join us in our mission to be a trusted partner helping clients succeed.
You are one-of-a-kind—and so is MSA Professional Services. Together, we can positively impact the lives of others.
MSA is about more than just a job. It’s a career. We ensure the development of each employee, while providing a work/life balance with flexibility and comp time. As a firm large enough to have resources and experts, we still remain small enough to create a close-knit team.
MSA is proud to support each team member’s career through guidance, mentoring and training. We support and allow you to find your true passions—even if it’s not in your original job description. MSA team members receive the following benefits:
Because most of us spend more hours at work than anywhere else, MSA keeps our people and culture at the forefront of everything we do. There are a lot of reasons our employees love where they work, so we’ll let them tell you…
Terri Velk, Engineer in Madison
“MSA has a comfortable and laid-back work environment and allows me to maintain a healthy work-life balance. They understand the importance of this and the benefit to employee productivity. MSA also employs people with a diverse set of talents, which results in an array of resources.
I love that I am able to work on an array of projects with different clients every day. There is an element of surprise that comes with our industry, which keeps work exciting. When we serve a community we represent and defend their best interests, we are positively impacting the communities we serve.”
Greg Gunderson, Team Leader in Madison
“MSA has allowed me to pursue my passion. They’ve given me the opportunity to take the training and development courses that put me where I am today as a Team Leader. Whether it be technical or management training, MSA has made it happen.
MSA also provides time and location flexibility that my young family needs. With the technology made available, I can work remotely, which provides significant flexibility in the hours I keep in the office.”
Sarah Fosbinder, Project Engineer in Dubuque
“I have been with MSA for more than 10 years, which is a testament in itself to the flexible, caring culture they provide and the employees who continue to uphold it. MSA’s workplace is one that fosters relationships and truly gives priority to its employees. We genuinely care about one another on a personal level and that directly transfers to our work responsibilities; we refuse to let each other down. Because MSA is an employee-owned company where information is openly and willingly shared with employees, everyone has a personal stake in the company, creating a sense of camaraderie. The leadership at MSA is communicative and keeps employees frequently engaged to provide feedback used to continually strive to be the best place to work.
At MSA, I get to work with communities to find solutions to their drinking water and wastewater challenges. Whenever I can help make life easier for someone else, that is a good day! I enjoy helping make projects more affordable for communities by evaluating funding alternatives and assisting with grant applications. Ultimately, I love that my work positively impacts communities by improving water quality, whether it be drinking water or the quality of water in their neighborhood creeks and rivers. That is important! Nothing can thrive without clean water, and that idea is what makes my work truly fulfilling.”
Raine Garder, Project Engineer in Baraboo
“I got into engineering because I grew up in a family of problem solvers. I love solving problems daily. My passion is designing and constructing roads, utility systems and other infrastructure. Every field of engineering impacts society in all that we see, do, touch and use.
MSA allows me to pursue my passions, especially within park/recreational type projects, where I’ve had the opportunity to create a division that not only resulted in my own personal growth, but also contributed to our company as a whole.”
I have been working at MSA Professional Services, Inc. full-time (Less than a year)
I love working at MSA Professional Services because we are a mission-driven company, 100% employee-owned S-corp, with clear career opportunities and support a great work/life balance. Talented teams throughout the company are willing to help; my coworkers share a passion and commitment to our work and dedication to teamwork. I have access to the knowledge and expertise of more than 300 professionals working toward the same common goals. I feel supported and successful.
Flexible work schedules some times allow for too much work without recharging. Unfortunately, I find that I don’t use all of the vacation time I have been given.
Advice to Management
Encourage employees to take time off and teach us how to get the most out of our time off -because you recognize how beneficial it is for both the employer and the employee. Taking time off, it turns out, makes you a better worker. Keep up with a hiring process continues to foster the culture by hiring bright individuals who are well rounded and are go getters but who also foster a work-life balance.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at MSA Professional Services, Inc. (Bettendorf, IA) in March 2016.
Interviewed by team of 3 people - team leader, program manager, and human resources person. Interview questions were pretty standard with no surprises. We held the interview in their conference room. It was very congenial and not intimidating or stressful at all. The interview lasted about an hour with no unanticipated questions asked at the interview.
I basically accepted the package that they offered. There was no negotiation involved.
