We founded Magnetar Capital a decade ago on the belief that new opportunities existed for a firm specifically structured to remove common barriers among various styles of investing: quantitative and qualitative, private equity and hedge fund, short and long duration and control vs. non-control.
We continue to build our business on that belief.
We invest across equity and credit, in both public and private transactions. We work to identify differentiated opportunities where we believe we can create a strategic advantage by engineering and scaling our processes and attempting to structure our investments to be profitable across a wide array of outcomes.
Our disciplined approach includes robust risk management and seeks to achieve quantifiable, repeatable results.
We apply these principles to four core businesses: Fixed Income, Energy, Quantitative and Fundamental Strategies.
Magnetar is a leading alternative asset manager. We are conveniently headquartered in downtown Evanston, steps from public transportation and the lakefront.
In addition to a competitive compensation package, we offer a broad range of employer benefits. These include: premium employer-subsidized healthcare coverage (PPO), dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents. Additional benefits include healthcare and commuter flexible spending accounts, 401(k) retirement plan with partial company match, life insurance and paid maternity and paternity leave.
We know how important healthy choices are important to our employees. We offer an onsite gym in our Evanston office (and subsidized memberships for other office locations), kitchens with healthy snacks, and health-conscious, catered lunches daily at no cost to our employers.
Magnetar employees are passionate about philanthropy and there are plenty of ways for employees to give back through the Magnetar Academy (a nonprofit financial literacy program for high-school students), organized volunteer efforts, and our company matching contributions program. Employees also receive one Community Day a year to volunteer at a cause of their choosing. To further enrich our work environment, we also organize extracurricular activities such as our running club, kickball and bowling teams as well as company-sponsored social events for employees and families.
We hope you’ll consider joining us as you explore careers at Magnetar!
Our people are intellectually rigorous, insightful, ethical and passionate about delivering results.
At Magnetar our culture is based on our core values of insight, integrity and passion. These qualities drive everything we do. We have an intense level of intellectual curiosity and a profound passion for our work. Our collaborative work environment is designed to bring out the best in our employees.
We founded the Magnetar Capital Foundation in 2011 to improve the quality of life in the communities where our employees live and work. The Foundation created the Magnetar Youth Investment Academy, an innovative program that provides a 30-hour financial education curriculum and teacher training for Chicago area high schools.
In its first year the Academy served 40 students in two schools. By 2015-2016 it had expanded to nearly 3,000 students in 50 schools and since inception has reached nearly 6,000 students helping them to build the knowledge and skills they need to make smart financial decisions.
In July of 2016 we announced a partnership with the University of Chicago to reach even more students. The Magnetar Capital Foundation is providing $5 million to UChicago STEM Education to further develop and grow the Academy’s high school financial education program.
"By leveraging the deep experience at the University of Chicago, we are expanding our ability to reach more high school students with vital financial education lessons that will benefit them throughout their lives," said Ross Laser, co-founder and President of Magnetar Capital.
In addition to the Magnetar Youth Investment Academy, the firm has supported numerous non-profit organizations focused on youth programs, health and human services and arts and culture.
Magnetar also offers an employee gift matching program and the firm’s leadership serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations.
Great people. Fast paced environment. Help every step of the way.
Jobs unclear at times. Some resources hard to find.
I applied online. I interviewed at Magnetar Capital (Evanston, IL).
Brief phone interview, followed by in person interview with my supervisor. Mostly asked behavioral questions to get a better gauge on who I was as a candidate. The process went pretty quickly, application and interviews within a week or two.
