McClatchy – Why Work With Us?

We are fiercely independent and relentlessly innovative. We’ve always blazed our own trail, finding new ways to extend our reach and deepen our ties to the communities we call home. While the media landscape is evolving, our goal remains the same: to produce strong independent local journalism in the public interest that is essential to the communities we serve.

Whether it’s digital, print, photography, or video, our journalists work tirelessly to deliver meaningful stories with impact that create positive change in our communities. With 30 newsrooms across the U.S. we provide our audience and local businesses the tools they need to grow smarter, every day.

Giving back is part of who we are. McClatchy has a long history of helping communities grow and thrive, a legacy which continues to this day. Our local teams are involved in hundreds of charitable efforts and events every year, working with community groups, businesses, and other institutions to make our neighborhoods stronger, our culture richer, and every community we serve a better place to be.

In Dallas-Fort Worth, the Star-Telegram’sGoodfellow Fund has been providing shoes and clothing for low-income school children during the holiday season since 1912. The (Raleigh) News & Observer’sFeed the Need program works in partnership with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern Carolina to raise awareness about childhood hunger and feed hungry kids.

Through our Together program, our teams at The Wichita Eagle, Belleville News-Democrat and the (Columbus, GA) Ledger-Enquirer work with local communities to find creative ways to make them stronger and more vibrant. It’s a truly collaborative effort: people from the community tell us what projects they’d like the program to take on, and local businesses fund the efforts.

The Miami Herald supports non-profit community and business organizations with more than $1.3 million in-kind sponsorships every year. Their Projects In Motion (PIM) team also volunteers in many community projects and fundraising efforts throughout South Florida. From collecting school supplies for back-to-school drives to volunteering with organizations that serve the disabled, homeless, families, etc.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram: The Goodfellow Fund Participated in the North Texas Giving Day, September 17,2015

It all started on February 3, 1857, when James McClatchy, an immigrant from Ireland, helped launch the company’s first newspaper in the wake of the California Gold Rush. While other papers of the time came and went, The Daily Bee—later renamed The Sacramento Bee—persevered. Its independent approach to journalism held public officials accountable and served the public interest, rather than those in power. That strong tradition is what powers all of us at McClatchy today.

The Bee family expanded with the founding of The Fresno Bee in 1922 and the purchase of The Modesto Bee in 1927. From 1936-1978 the company thrived under the innovative leadership of Eleanor McClatchy, James McClatchy’s granddaughter, who expanded the company to radio and television. She shattered the glass ceiling before it was a concept.

What followed was more than a century of growth, fueled by the acquisition of quality media companies in growing markets across the country, including the 2006 purchase of Knight Ridder, which made McClatchy, at that time, the second largest newspaper publisher in the United States. Along the way, the work of our journalists has been honored with many awards, including 54 Pulitzer Prizes.

Today, McClatchy is a leading local media company in 30 U.S. markets, connecting with our communities through print, digital, mobile apps, and more. As we continue to innovate and technology advances, the way we deliver award-winning content will continue to evolve, but our dedication to strong independent local journalism in the public interest will never waver.

As a member of the McClatchy team, you will be a part of a culture dedicated to creating a positive work/life balance with opportunities for growth.

McClatchy offers a competitive benefits package that includes paid time off, short-term and long-term disability plans, pre-tax transportation solutions, wellness screenings, 401(k) match, affordable medical, dental and vision as well as non-traditional coverage such as accident, critical illness, identity theft and pet insurance. McClatchy is committed to diversity and is an equal opportunity employer. The company extends benefits to domestic partners, same sex spouses, and their legal dependents. We also offer flexible working schedules and telecommuting options.  To learn more about our benefits please visit www.McClatchylivewell.com

I have been working at McClatchy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have two on the best bosses I could ask for. Both my Regional Director and DOS are great leaders; friendly, caring, helpful and humble.

I work remote which is extremely convenient. More companies should adopt this structure. I’ve worked for big media companies that were super strict on missing days in the office. McClatchy knows people are more productive when they are grateful and comfortable.

Also offering sales training that was better than my previous training trips.

    Cons

Still making the shirt to digital. Some bumps in the road in the first few weeks of account transfers but other than that pretty good.

    Advice to Management

Make communication during account transitions more fluid between both reps and MCs.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at McClatchy (Raleigh, NC) in June 2010.

    Interview

The interview process starts out with a phone screen. Then there is an email questionnaire of technical questions. Finally, the first 30 minutes of the interview process includes a multiple-choice quiz of technical questions that any qualified candidate should be able to answer. The interview process includes meeting with immediate managers, the team co-workers, and if that goes well, some folks further upstream.
