MedStar Health's Total Rewards Program is more than just our associate benefit package. It is a tangible reward for excellence and highlights our appreciation of our associates' hard work.

The MedStar Health Total Rewards package includes:

  • Health Insurance Benefits: Associates have multiple health insurance benefit options. They may also elect dental and vision coverage. MedStar Health shares the bi-weekly premium cost with associates. Health benefits are effective the first of the month following an associate's start date. 

  • Flexible Spending Accounts: Associates may choose to participate in medical and/or dependant care flexible spending accounts. These allow associates to use tax-free dollars to pay for medical/dependant care expenses not covered by a health plan. 

  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Associates are our most valuable asset. MedStar Health offers the employee assistance program to safeguard their well-being and help them balance their needs at work and home. EAP services include counseling, financial and retirement planning, convenience services, entertainment referrals and more. 

  • Paid Leave: MedStar Health offers a generous paid leave package for every associate. Annual allotments vary by specific entity and are based on years of service within MedStar Health and work status. In addition, associates are offered paid holidays. 

  • Retirement Savings: Associates are encouraged to participate in MedStar Health's tax deferred savings plan administered by Fidelity Investments. Since our associates' service leads to our success, MedStar Health offers an associate match, as well as an annual service contribution. 

  • Basic Life Insurance: MedStar Health cares about you and your family's peace of mind. That's why we provide basic life insurance coverage equal to one times your annual base salary. Basic life insurance is provided at no cost to associates. Associates may also purchase supplemental and dependant life insurance. 

  • Disability Plan: MedStar Health provides full-time associates with both short-term disability and long-term disability coverage at no cost to the associate. Associates are eligible after six months of employment, and may purchase additional coverage if needed. 

  • Tuition Assistance: MedStar Health cares about our associates' personal growth and development. Our tuition assistance benefit can be applied to graduate and undergraduate tuition, registration fees, books and certifications.

John L. Green Scholarship

The John L. Green Generation of Leadership Scholarship awards competitive scholarships to highly motivated African-American associates of MedStar Health and students enrolled at Morgan State University who aspire to leadership careers in healthcare.

The scholarship honors the late John L. Green, executive vice president of corporate services who served in executive leadership roles at Medlantic Healthcare Group and MedStar Health from 1983 - 2002, and on the Morgan State University Board of Regents in Baltimore. He served as chairman of the Morgan State University board from 1990 to 1995. The scholarship is reserved for exceptional individuals who share Mr. Green's traits of excellence, leadership and commitment to the vision, mission and values of MedStar Health. This targeted scholarship reflects Mr. Green's commitment to increasing African American representation in leadership positions in health care.

Established in 2003, the scholarship is funded entirely by a grant from the board of directors of MedStar Health to commemorate Mr. Green's contributions and his legacy of excellence.


For MedStar Health Associates

Each year, MedStar Health associates have the opportunity to be awarded one of five possible scholarships, each equaling up to $3,500. Recipients may use funds for tuition and/or fees for the current academic semester (in which the recipient is currently enrolled) or the upcoming academic semester. Scholarship award funds cannot be directed to certification and continuing education credits.


To qualify for a scholarship as a MedStar Health associate, the applicant must be:

  • An African-American associate at any MedStar Health entity who aspires to a leadership career in healthcare;
  • Employed for at least one year at a MedStar Health entity (must be in good standing with no disciplinary actions on file within the past year);
  • Pursuing a bachelor's, master's or higher degree in a field applicable to healthcare administration/leadership; and
  • Employed in a management/supervisory position.

    Application

    I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at MedStar Health (Baltimore, MD) in November 2016.

    Interview

    A nurse recruiter called me and set up the interview. My interview was with just the Nurse Manager. The interview was more of a conversation about my current experience and information about the unit (schedule, orientation, etc.). Afterwards, I received a tour of the unit. I also completed shadowing on the day of my interview at night.
