    A decade ago, with Google and Yahoo lumbering onto its turf, Jorn Lyseggen's fledgling media-intelligence company, Meltwater, faced an existential challenge. Getting clients to pay Meltwater to track press mentions suddenly became a lot harder when Google Alerts was offering the same service for free.


    Meltwater acquires Oxford Uni spin-out Wrapidity to add AI to media monitoring capabilities

    Meltwater, the self-described 'media intelligence' company, has acquired Wrapidity, a U.K.-based AI startup that has built technology to automate the extraction of data from unstructured web-based content. Terms of the deal remain undisclosed, including how much Oxford University, from where Wrapidity spun-out in early 2015, will benefit, though I understand it only held a minor share in the company via its technology transfer arm.

Humble Beginnings. A Big Idea for Changing the World.

This story began in Oslo in 2001, just after the dotcom bubble burst. Jorn Lyseggen deposited $15,000 into a brand new business bank account, courtesy of the Norwegian Science Foundation. He had a business partner, a coffee machine, some used furniture, and borrowed office space in a Norwegian shipyard shack.

He also had a big idea.

The idea was simple: to make business decisions across the globe both easier and more powerful by harnessing public information living on the Internet, and use it to deliver valuable insights that weren’t accessible without technology.

The first challenge Meltwater took on was to transform the traditional press clippings service into an automated, intelligent media monitoring service. It anticipated the importance of social conversational data in conjunction with traditional news coverage, and gave customers a new way to build media databases by allowing them to hyper-target their journalists by the content of their articles – not just beat or publication.

Meltwater quickly grew into Norway’s leading media monitoring solution—and then the rest of Europe’s. We expanded our services beyond monitoring to include engagement and analysis features. Today we are one of the largest media intelligence companies in the world, with San Francisco headquarters and 55 offices, with 1,300 employees globally. Our truly global/local presence has earned us more than 25,000 clients in 121 countries. Our nonprofit African incubator, MEST, is a great example as to how we use technology to bridge gaps not only in information, but also in socioeconomics.

Our sales organization is broken in to three distinct parts. Our Client Acquisition department is the new business arm of the company. We aim to attract new clients by providing customized consultations, and doing a thorough needs analysis and demonstrating the value of Meltwater. The Client Acquisition team is our largest business unit within Meltwater, and offers the International Management Program, which gives the opportunity to move in to management very early on in your career. This program has been a successful part of Meltwater for well over 10 years, and almost all of the Executives in the company have progressed through this program. We help to refine raw skills and management potential into the skillset needed to run large teams and offices, and also have the ability to move employees around to any of our 55 offices globally, if that is something that holds appeal.

The role of our Client Success organization is to ensure that our clients are truly successful using our products, throughout the entirety of their subscription. Our Client Success team become trusted advisors for their clients, so that their accounts are fully optimized in order to get the most out of the service they have purchased. This team works not only to renew their clients subscriptions, but also to introduce new tools when appropriate to grow the size of their accounts over time. We have many different paths of progression within this organization, ranging from managing teams and offices, to managing larger accounts, and roles which focus more on growing accounts as opposed to renewing them on a daily basis.

Our Enterprise Sales division works with some of the largest and most recognizable companies in the World. This team of experienced sales professionals are typically long-standing Meltwater employees whose natural abilities and inclination leads them toward a path where creating complex solutions for larger clients is a better fit than managing a team or office of people. This is a highly prestigious and desireable career path for many people in Meltwater, and it is a rapidly growing division inside of Meltwater.

Our Product and Engineering teams create the products used by over 25,000 clients globally. We have a world-class organization spread out across major hubs in San Francisco, New Hampshire, Berlin, Gothenburg and Budapest.

    Language skill test first. I need to summarize a Chinese news into English. This round was followed by a phone interview with a hiring manager. Our conversation lasts about 40 mins. She seems to be really interested in my backgrounds. One day later, I had another phone interview with the team leader. Then I was invited to attend the Mingle Session which will happen in just a few days.
