I have been working at Mercatus Center full-time
-the community is great
-benefits are amazing--Mercatus pays your health insurance premiums and deductible!! you can also take 2 classes per semester at GMU for free
-lots of room for growth
I don't have a great work/life balance since there's a bit of an expectation of being "always available" on the comms team unless you set very specific personal boundaries.
I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Mercatus Center (Arlington, VA) in May 2016.
Two weeks after submitting an online application, I sent a follow-up email to the HR department. The email was answered 10 days later by an HR person who set up an interview, but addressed me by the incorrect first name in the email communications. I was told there was nothing specific to prepare for the interview. The interview occurred 7 days after the interview was scheduled.
The HR person who interviewed me was abrupt from the beginning of the call. She did not introduce herself, did not thank me for taking time to interview with her, nor did she ask any questions related to my professional background or skills.
The second question she asked was "Please tell me what Mercatus White Papers you have read and how would you promote these topics." As, this was a first interview, and I had inquired if there was anything that needed to be prepared for the interview I was taken aback. I let her know the research areas of the organization that were of interest to me and how they drew me professionally to the organization. At this point, the HR rep stated, "I am terminating this interview since you aren't prepared."
I offered for us to finish her list of questions or to reschedule the interview once she shared the preparation materials with me. She refused to complete her questions or to reschedule the interview.
The overall experience was unprofessional and I suspect indicative of the working culture at the organization.
