Midwest Dental is the parent company of four regional brands. In the west, our dental offices are known as Mountain Dental. In the midwest, we are known as Midwest Dental. In the east, our practices operate under the Merit Dental brand. And further east, we are known as Mondovi Dental.
Regardless of geography or brand name, our focus is always the same: our patients.
“Home is where the heart is.” It may be a little cliché, but there is certainly truth in the old saying. You may have been in this situation yourself at some point. You head out to seek your place in the world, only to find that home, the place you know so well, was where you always wanted to be in the first place.
Dr. Zach McCallum can certainly attest to this kind of story. After graduating from Marquette University in 2007, the young dentist from western Madison, Wisconsin was eager to find the perfect place to open his own dental practice and use his skills to make a career for himself.
His search landed him in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, where he opened up his very own practice. And everything started out great. “Things began well,” said Dr. McCallum. “We attracted approximately 400 new patients in the first 12 months.” But despite booming business, the local economy in Bloomfield Hills was struggling, and it became difficult for Dr. McCallum to keep the practice afloat. On top of that, the stress of running the business side of the practice was weighing on him. He had gone to dental school to practice dentistry, and yet he was spending as much time on administrative tasks as he was on treating his patients.
Then home started calling.
Eventually, the private practice game got more overwhelming than Dr. McCallum cared to put up with, and he decided the best thing to do was pack up and return home to Madison. He had family, friends, and mentors back in Madison, and realized it was the ideal place for him to develop his career. Having already tried the solo practice route, Dr. McCallum joined a larger group practice in Madison with six other dentists, where he worked for seven years. He enjoyed that the business burdens were
less strenuous than before, but still felt the drawbacks in the group setting. More than anything, he still wanted to lead his own practice.
Then in 2015, a new opportunity presented itself. Dr. McCallum joined with Midwest Dental, taking over leadership of their practice in New Glarus, Wisconsin. Dr. McCallum enjoyed his time in New Glarus, where he was able to make his own clinical decisions and focus more on dentistry. But the truth was he had stepped into an existing practice, when his real career goal was to start a practice from the ground up; one he could shape to fit his personal care philosophies. Then in 2016, Midwest Dental helped him realize that goal. Understanding what Dr. McCallum envisioned for his career, they opened a brand new practice in Cross Plains, Wisconsin, which is just minutes west of Madison, and brought Dr. McCallum on board to lead it. That is when everything truly started falling into place.
Now Dr. McCallum is leading a brand new practice, which is pretty much in his own backyard, and finding everything he wanted in his career as a dentist. “Working with Midwest Dental really hits the sweet spot for me,” said Dr. McCallum. “I get to manage the practice in a way that fits my best qualities and personality, while leaving most of the non-clinical work in the capable hands of the Midwest Dental support team. This has allowed me to focus my efforts on patient care and my own ongoing professional development.”
Dr. McCallum’s time away from the office has also improved. “Midwest Dental has been great about providing me ample time to spend with my family and pursuing my passions outside of dentistry,” he said.
“And their network of support personnel ensures that my patients and practice will be well-taken care of anytime I am away. I always have peace of mind when I am out of the office.”
With a little help from Midwest Dental, Dr. McCallum’s career journey has really come full-circle. After a brief stint practicing out of state, his path ultimately led him back home to Madison, where after a few stops, he found the career he had always been looking for.
Sometimes, there is just no denying it – “there’s no place like home.”

The company is growing at a fast clip and with growth there is change and new approaches that undoubtedly need to be established.
Advice to Management
Strong leadership is in place. Continue to invest in infrastructure so the growth will be sustainable and there to support great dentistry.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Midwest Dental (Baldwin, WI) in October 2016.
Casual process. Applied and was called for a face to face interview. The regional manager was very pleasant and fun to talk with. She brought in the location dentist at the end of the interview and he seemed awesome too.
