I have been working at Minnesota Department of Health full-time (More than 10 years)
Depending on your role, you really can engage in activities that affect the public positively. There's room for everyone to participate in legislative changes to make improvements. I've stayed for 20+ years because it has always been interesting, challenging, and gratifying.
You have to want public service, because there are many political pressures, and detractors. Sometimes, it's challenging to handle unhappy public when we've done everything the law authorizes us to do. Self care is a must.
Advice to Management
Political appointees in executive office versus career department employees. Sometimes the two are too disconnected and don't communicate meaningfully.
I applied online. I interviewed at Minnesota Department of Health (Saint Paul, MN) in May 2016.
Received notice, given ample information about location, parking, and process
First and second interview
First interview with peer and supervisor
Second interview with peer and supervisor's supervisor
Staff helped with explanation of process and where to park and what location to go
Had to be swiped in to attend meeting
