Monotype – Why Work For Us?

Monotype is one of the world’s best-known providers of type-related products, technologies and expertise. Our fonts and technologies are designed to enable creative expression and give brands a distinct global voice. We’re behind the text you read in newspapers and books, in the apps on your phone, in the websites you browse, on the dashboard you scan, on the goods you buy, and in the games you play. We bring the world’s words to the page and the screen.

We have a library of over 20,000 typefaces, the product of the world's most celebrated and gifted type designers. Our library includes some of the most famous and widely-used fonts, such as the Helvetica®, Univers® and Fruitger® typeface families, as well as innovative and experimental fonts from the newest type talent.

Are you just our type? Are we just yours? We’re 800+ people in 13 cities around the world, dedicated to type, technology and design. We’re fired up about what those three things can achieve when they’re put together, for our clients and for society. So we work together to make that happen in inspiring ways – type designers, developers, engineers, account managers and many others – with the freedom to act on new ideas and the opportunity to make a difference. If you can see yourself slotting in at a company with an inspiring heritage, a name for creativity, and the widest possible range of clients, we’d love to hear from you.

Monotype is full of extremely talented, friendly and fun people. Meet a few of those people that make Monotype such a great place to work.

Anna S., Office Manager (London, UK)

Karen M., Marketing (Woburn, MA)

Terrance W., Type Designer (Michigan)

We want our people to work in spaces that are inspiring and liberating. When we refurbished our 42,000 sq ft headquarters in Woburn, Massachusetts, we wanted the design to mirror our brand and reflect our commitment to design and typographic innovation.

Our new work spaces in Woburn, New York, and London celebrate the ‘glyph as hero’, with letterforms abstracted through entrances and lobbies, along corridors, and embedded into flooring. We’ve maximized the open floor plan to enable the kind of collaboration and co-creation that Monotype employees enjoy.

I have been working at Monotype full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company has made some exciting acquisitions in the past few years and is currently tying it all together. The sales team has been reorganized and set up to aggressively hunt for new business. There are a lot of new faces on the sales team (including myself), along with some very tenured people who are always willing to help when you have questions. It's not uncommon to see senior management walking through the office and conversing with any employee, regardless of role. They're very approachable and care deeply about the organization. There's a ton of opportunity to come in here, be creative, and grow professionally.

    Cons

    None.

The organization is going through a transition, like almost every other technology company out there. In order to stay relevant, companies need to be flexible which means employees need to be flexible. An "adapt and overcome" mindset is a must at any organization.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course. Continue to communicate. Continue to train on products and leadership skills.

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Monotype (Boston, MA) in August 2016.

    Interview

Quick and relatively easy. The interviews were not focused leading to duplicate questions and not a well rounded interview. However everyone was very nice and respectful and excited about the future of the company.

    Interview Questions

    • Nothing unexpected nor difficult. Very straightforward and often duplicates of previous employee's.   1 Answer
