I hold the position of People Director at Morgan McKinley. I was appointed to the role in Summer 2013, having previously supported both our UK and Asia Pacific operations for over six years in the role of HR Manager.
My passion is people, so there is no better place to work than here, which is all about people! At Morgan McKinley we believe we have the opportunity to improve the careers of the people we work with, our candidates. Peoples’ work is hugely important. It leads to them being able to achieve their ambitions, and we act in a critical advisory capacity in this important part of peoples’ lives. If you want to be part of an organisation that improves peoples’ lives, this could be the place for you!
We are also critically focused on improving the lives of our employees by providing fulling and rewarding careers. Joining Morgan McKinley means you will have the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the most experienced people in the industry. As a business, our success is based on our people - we develop them to be specialists in their discipline so we can provide the best possible service to our customers.
I am part of the Global Talent Acquisition team specializing in recruiting talented individuals to work in our offices in Hong Kong, China and Japan. I speak, read and write advanced Japanese and read and speak basic Mandarin Chinese and have previously lived in Japan and Taiwan.
We pride ourselves on being a career ally to all of our candidates throughout their career as well as providing a high level of customer service to our clients. As for the people you will work with here at Morgan McKinley, everyone is friendly, open to have a chat and our 'Free Friday' events in London at the end of every quarter are legendary. From day one you will be valued and supported in your career development.
I am currently based in Sydney where I look after the hiring needs of both our Sydney and Singapore offices.
I studied Law and graduated from University in 2010 in Glasgow before taking on a graduate recruitment role in the UK. I then decided to move to the sunnier climates of Australia over a year ago where I continued in a recruitment role before joining Morgan McKinley. My role is to network and source candidates with a range of experience from interns, graduates and career changers, who have limited exposure to the recruitment world but have key transferable skills, through to experienced consultants who are looking for a change and that next step in their career.
My top tip: Recruitment can be a demanding yet highly rewarding career with unlimited options depending on your own personal and career aspirations.
On joining Morgan McKinley I was looking for my next challenge. With my background in sales & HR I thought a busy and rewarding role within Recruitment would be just the challenge I was looking for. I was delighted with my decision and have loved every minute! Since December 2015 I moved into the People team and I am now one of the Talent Acquisitions Specialist for Morgan McKinley.
My advice is always be prepared! For many people the interview process can be the most daunting part of the job seeking process. However, you can raise your confidence and improve your performance if you are aware of what to expect and what is expected of you. Preparation is key to a successful interview.
Katie Instone | Talent Acquisition: UK
I’m based in London where I am responsible for business partnering with Managers, Operational Directors and the COO in attracting and recruiting employees for Morgan McKinley’s UK offices - London, Sussex, Surrey and Thames Valley. I have previous experience working across multiple divisions including Business Support, Finance and Human Resources. My experience within recruitment has allowed me to understand the benefits, rewards and challenges associated with a recruitment career.
Preparation is crucial when applying for any role. Here at Morgan McKinley we are looking for people who are self-motivated, entrepreneurial and determined to be the best they can be. To work at Morgan McKinley it is not essential for you to have experience in recruitment however you must explore our company, the culture and values.
At Morgan McKinley we recruit first rate people who in turn recruit top talent for our clients. Our basic philosophy is to identify individuals with the right qualities to be great recruitment consultants, induct them in our Morgan McKinley values, and then empower them to serve, to specialise and to lead. If we decide to work together at Morgan McKinley it will be, first and foremost, because we believe you share the core beliefs and behaviours that are fundamental to our organisation:
“I always act with integrity and respect and do the right thing.” We build trust because our reputation depends on it, and our reputation means everything. The key word here is always. We always do the right thing.
“I believe in what we are doing and I give my best every day.” We show commitment. That means we give our very best and we see things through. As a top racing driver once said, “To finish first, you must first finish.”
“I engage in open, honest, two-way, timely communications internally and externally.” We always communicate. With colleagues, with clients, with candidates. Above all that means listening. Sometimes the most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said. Sensitivity and empathy are the keys to our success.
“In an ambitious company, I recognise change is essential and I am open to it.” We enjoy getting out of our comfort zone. There’s nothing “routine” about the way we do things at Morgan McKinley. Whereas our competitors will say “We’ve always done it that way”, at Morgan McKinley we say, “If you always do what you’ve done, you’ll always get what you’ve got.” Recruitment is a competitive business and this means we need to stretch beyond the traditional boundaries.
Everybody reaches a point in their career when they consider their next move. That moment could happen when you are a newly qualified graduate, but it could also happen when you are a professional looking for a change of direction.
Have you considered a career in recruitment?
Today, a career in recruitment does not mean leaving your profession behind. On the contrary, a great recruitment consultant uses professional insights and experience to offer excellent advice to fellow professionals. In the process, you are enhancing your own skills and broadening your horizons. That is what Morgan McKinley means when we say, “You are more”!
So what makes a great recruiter? How can you tell if you would fit in? There is no simple answer, but there is one simple piece of advice: talk to us!
The Morgan McKinley Group prides itself on hiring individuals from a variety of backgrounds. Our team covers an incredible spectrum from new graduates through accountants, engineers, IT professionals and sales professionals to actors, teachers, military personnel and more... This is part of the appeal of a career in recruitment: you will meet a diversity of talent and backgrounds unknown in other industries.
But at our company they all share one thing in common: They live our Morgan McKinley’s Values and deliver an excellent service experience to our clients and candidates every hour of every day. (read about here)
What we offer
It is obviously in everybody’s interest that you make a smooth transition into the world of recruitment. Therefore we offer full training in the Morgan McKinley way, in the jobs market in your specialist sector, and in sales techniques. Where it makes sense, we tailor this training to your individual needs. In short, we will provide all the support necessary to maximise your full potential.
You can be sure of this: your career with Morgan McKinley will not be boring or routine. You will service multiple clients and you’ll meet hundreds of candidates from a wide range of businesses and industries. To top it all, you’ll enjoy uncapped earnings based on your performance. In that respect, it is rather like having your own business – you will get out of it what you put in.
A challenging, but truly rewarding career.
So who are we looking for?
You Are More
I have been working at Morgan McKinley full-time (More than 10 years)
Morgan McKinley has global presence, but it is not one of the largest recruitment firm around.
The aim is not to become the largest, but provide the best service to the area we are operating.
I believe our Banking & Financial Service recruiters are the best in the Tokyo Market.
Some of the factors which makes us different is ;
Long Term Strategy ( Discussing our business plan for 2020 currently )
Flat culture ( easy access to senior management, including our CEO )
Consultative approach ( Not CV factory )
Team based culture ( No candidate ownership policy )
Great Training ( Junior level to even MD level )
Diversity ( Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, Bangladesh, American in the same team )
CSR Commitment ( participate FIT for Charity Run every year etc )
And Morgan McKinley Tokyo offers great social life.
Monthly Free Friday, BBQ in the roof top garden in the office, Incentive trips to enjoy Surf ( beach at Guam ) & Turf ( ski at Nozawa Oncen, Nagano ) etc.
We know each other well, and we go out a lot together.
We work hard, we party harder.
As Tokyo team grew, the office space is limited for everyone.
But, I am aware the senior management team are discussing the plan to solve.
Advice to Management
Please keep the great vision and values we have.
I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Morgan McKinley.
Whole process took a month:
First I did an interview over the phone, very positive...
A month later, I received an email to attend an onsite interview in Shanghai...
Typical interview questions + roleplay + case study...
Nice interaction with the manager...
