Morley Builders – Why Work For Us?


Military service during World War II brought the founding principals of Morley Building Company to Southern California. Morley Benjamin returned in 1947 to build a few single family homes in Pacoima, then larger tracts in Lakewood and Whittier. A year later, he was joined by Sherman “Tex” Given and they remained partners for 33 years.

During the 1950s, the re-named Morley Construction Company moved into competitively bid public work, completing schools and civic buildings throughout the region. In the ’60s and ’70s, construction for private clients predominated with negotiated contracts and often repeat customers. The company built commercial buildings, recording and television studios and thousands of apartment units.

Bert Lewitt joined the organization as a project manager in 1970 and Morley’s son, Mark Benjamin, started as an apprentice carpenter shortly thereafter. The salaried staff grew as did the number of trade workers in the field. Tex Given retired in 1980, which began the transition to a new generation of leadership.

The 1980s was a decade of growth and change. The salaried staff continued to expand as middle managers and college graduates joined the company. An employee ownership plan was created to give staff a stake in the company’s progress. In 1984, Benchmark Contractors, Inc. was formed as an open-shop contractor to meet the needs of a growing residential market. At the same time, a holding company now known as Morley Builders was formed to help market services.

With the turn of the century, Morley continued its managed growth in both human and financial resources. The early 2000s saw Morley’s reputation for quality take on new prominence as the builder of choice for new landmarks. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the Getty Villa Museum and the California Science Center were just the beginning of great projects in the new century.

Morley Builders prides itself on a diverse project mix, which was instrumental in weathering the economic downturn of the first decade of the 21st century. In 2013, the Morley family faced another greater challenge, the tragic loss of Mark Benjamin, President and CEO.

The integrity of the Morley Builders family provided the solid foundation for continued success. A buy-sell agreement and succession plan allowed for a structured transition to 100% employee ownership. Morley banking and surety relationships remain solid, and the company maintains a bonding capacity in excess of $650 million.

Today, Charles Muttillo, a 30-year veteran of the firm, guides Morley’s Leadership Team. The management team’s experience, capabilities and wisdom lead our innovative and entrepreneurial staff to build the quality projects for which we are known.

The ideals of collaboration, innovation and trust remain firm, and the uncompromising integrity of Morley employee owners provides the foundation for future growth and success.

Morley Builders’ entire business philosophy is based on the “long-term” view. Established over 70 years ago, we seek to continually provide high-quality construction services. We believe in treating everyone as we would want to be treated – with  sincerity, honesty, kindness and trust.

Morley Builders is owned by nearly 200 employees and has a total craftsman payroll that ranges from 300 to 600, depending on the number of self-performed field projects under construction. Morley’s annual volume of work averages over $300 million and we have a bonding capacity in excess of $650 million.

As a member of Engineering New Record’s (ENR) “Top 400 Contractors,” Morley is prominent in the top echelon of Southern California building constructors each year. Our 70+ years of experience has helped us gain the experience necessary to provide the construction leadership, the right tools and especially the skilled, creative people to meet any construction challenge.

Morley Builders contracts its services through two wholly-owned subsidiaries, Morley Construction Company and Benchmark Contractors, Inc.

Morley Construction Company is one of the largest Southern California-based general contractors, specializing in Type I and Type II projects built primarily of reinforced concrete and steel. The company builds major civic structures; educational and research facilities; parking structures; commercial, retail, medical and healthcare buildings; and multifamily residential complexes. Additionally, Morley is experienced in design-build, seismic strengthening, preservation, modernization and LEED® rated/sustainable projects.

Morley’s Concrete Group has the ability to self-perform all structural and architectural concrete-related work with its own workforce including forming, placing and finishing. The concrete group maintains and operates its own formwork and equipment, and has extensive experience in budgeting and construction structural concrete work. This expertise has been utilized by owner-builders, construction managers and other general contractors. Morley’s Concrete Group has offices in Santa Monica, Irvine and San Diego. 


Benchmark Contractors, Inc. was formed in 1984 to continue the company’s long tradition of multifamily residential projects. Benchmark is skilled in all structure types including steel, concrete and wood-frame. Our diverse project experience consists of multifamily residential, mixed-use and transit-oriented developments, student housing/campus facilities and senior/assisted living facilities. Benchmark has the ability to contract with open-shop subcontractors, which can provide significant cost savings on certain projects.

 Morley’s commitment to safety is more than  just a program, it’s a culture. We commit to  this culture through ongoing development of  next practices and constant evaluation of best  practices. We offer comprehensive and robust  training curriculums on-demand, onsite and i  in-the-classroom, empowering our people to  be confident in their knowledge about our safe  working practices.

 At Morley, safety is everyone’s responsibility.  Every employee is encouraged to think, act  and work with safety in mind. Our entire  operations team, from the Vice President of  Field Operations to each Superintendent, has  committed to obtain the Board of Certified  Safety Professional’s Safety Trained Supervisor  (STS) designation. Our Project Engineers are  coached by our Safety Engineers through our Project Engineer Safety Training program. We are proud our employees’ dedication to safety was recently recognized as we were awarded First Place for National Construction Safety Excellence by The Associate General Contractors of America.

Safety is a dynamic, lifelong learning process. Our goal at Morley is to create an environment where every employee is empowered to take ownership of our safety culture. Together, we carefully consider every opportunity to promote safety, allowing us to build smarter.

Our Commitment to Safety

  • All Superintendents are OSHA 30-Hour trained and all Project Management Staff are OSHA 10-Hour trained
  • Annual contractor safety orientation course for every contractor who works on our projects
  • Pre-Task Planning/Job Hazard Analysis is used by our craftsmen and subcontractors prior to starting any new task. The PTP/JHA requires a breakdown of each task, consideration of any hazards, and development of a plan to perform the job safely.
  • New Hire Safety Training and Mentoring Program which targets field employees’ critical first 90 days. The program applies to all new Morley employees, regardless of experience
  • Project Engineer Safety Program, guided by on-staff Safety Engineers to identify, mitigate and resolve potential jobsite risks
  • Our Safety Committee is composed of foremen who volunteer to review existing field practices and make them safer. Examples include:

An industry first designed and engineered “Dead Man” Concrete Block for fall protection

A “Cantilever Cargo Platform” that allows for safer movement of materials and fall protection

A “Wall Panel Storage Rack” to facilitate the storage and safe access of wall forms

The “Shark Cage” to protect and provide more effective fall protection while working inside beams on long span decks

  • Empower and encourage all staff to develop tools to mitigate construction risk
  • Active members of the American Society of Concrete Contractors Safety and Risk Management Council and the American Society of Safety Engineers
  • Partners with local Associated General Contractors of America to provide Concrete and Masonry Hazard Prevention and Safety Training courses

    Morley is one of those rare companies that offers exciting opportunities to be involved in cutting edge construction projects with the added benefit of being part of an employee owned firm. Day in and day out our people are helping change the skyline of Southern California. In my 30+ years in construction I've not encountered a more passionate and motivated group of builders!

    I'm sure it's not the same for all, but the interview process was quite extensive. I met roughly 5+ employees- from field interview to panel interview. Final interview was a full days length. interviewed with (2) 2 person panel, took an assessment that gauged your scheduling and estimating skills, had a nice lunch with an employee that held the same position and finished the day taking a tour of one of their projects.
