  1. Software Engineering Manager Interview

    Easy Interview

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Mythical Games (Los Angeles, CA) in Jun 2021

A recruiter reached out to me and discussed the company and the position. Setup a more formal interview for the next day. We had a great conversation over about an hour and the recruiter wanted to move forward with the next step which was a hiring manager interview. Several weeks went by, and recruiter told me that because of an imminent game release, the interview would have to be scheduled for later. A number of weeks passed with no contact, except from a different (new) recruiter at Mythical. The first recruiter contacted me again and said the interview would have to be delayed because now everyone was on vacation after crunching to get the game out, and that the next round would not be with the VP but with two developers (no problem). Two weeks later, and about an hour before the interview was canceled due to the developers needing to focus on a technical challenge. The new recruiter contacted me and apologized and said she would set up the interview with the VP for the next week when he returned from vacation. The next week I was sent a form email saying that they would not move forward. Two calls, two canceled interviews, weeks of waiting and not even a "sorry we wasted your time, but our recruiter was wrong to move you to the next stage."

Two takeaways, and I would caution other applicants. The first recruiter said that Mythical Games cared for their employees and didn't do crunch time (like typical in the game industry). Apparently caring for employees does not extend to interviewees, even when the recruiter was super excited about the candidate. I wasted considerable time and had to rearrange my schedule more than once to accommodate this company. Second, credibility is lacking when the recruiter says one thing about the work environment and the reality is abundantly different.

Are you OK with just being a people manager?
