Start Out Right: Smith Trader Development Program and Mentorship
When you join our team, our intensive Trader Development Program and mentorship will teach you the ropes without making you sink or swim. Smith’s business model is complex, which is why our training program is engineered to help new traders learn how Smith works at every level.
The Trader Development Program begins with classroom training that covers Smith’s basic business practices and then deepens the comprehension by taking new traders through key departments. Traders will learn Smith’s workings through hands-on experience, from studying messaging with our marketing department to inspecting, testing, and safely packaging product in our quality department. With real experience of what we do each day, you’ll learn the ins and outs of Smith fast and fluently.
Our team of experienced traders and leaders from across departments is here to help you at each step of the way, offering years of experience and ingenuity as you build up a command of sales, purchasing, and commodity expertise and learn our business inside and out. By the end of your training, you'll have the confidence to step out onto our sales floors and make your mark in Smith's global marketplace.
And – even after graduation from our Trader Development Program – the support from Smith's experienced team doesn't stop. With an average employee tenure of seven years, many of our earliest team members are still actively helping Smith grow today and are there to offer leadership and mentorship as you find a place in one of our immersive and supportive trading teams. After your first 60 days working fulltime with us, you'll be eligible for health plan benefits. This place is legit health insurance is amazing and they want you to do well and succeed. Everyone here is super receptive and helpful and they pay way more than you'd think. PTO is awesome and so are the events.

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at N.F. Smith & Associates (Houston, TX) in March 2017.
Had a telephonic interview with Solution Architect who contacted me post my application on the college recruitment board. The conversation revolved around my experience and college projects and other behavioral questions. I was told that I would be informed about the next rounds in a week's time. It has been more than 1.5 months and I never heard from the team back. Followed up multiple time, but no response.
