N2 Publishing – Why Work For Us?

We're changing the way people think about work.

"Company culture" has quickly become one of the buzz words for 2017. But there's a huge difference between companies who offer perks and companies who offer quality of life.

N2 has recently been recognized by big names like Fortune, Inc., and Entrepreneur for our positive company culture and extraordinary growth, but we didn't start out in the news. It all started quite humbly, when our founders, Duane and Earl, dreamed about building a company where success in the workplace didn't compete with success at home. They found the perfect opportunity in an untapped market: neighborhood publications.

To date, N2 has over 900 publications throughout the nation. That means residents in 900 communities are more closely connected to their neighborhoods, advertisers in 900 communities are finding more long-term business with the customers they want, and our N2 sales representatives in 900 communities are experiencing a fuller, freer personal and professional lifestyle.

Culture is the most important thing about a workplace.

You know when you meet someone and in the first five minutes you learn exactly what's most important to them? When you meet N2, the first thing you know about us is we're really passionate about our culture. We spend a ton of energy talking about how work shouldn't be your most important thing -- that should be your loved ones, and your work should be second-in-command to them.

That may sound crazy to some, but, for us, we're a business centered on people -- from our product to our business model -- and we couldn't do business well if we didn't love people right. But we don't focus on providing work-life balance because we think a positive culture will have some profit gain. We truly love our people, and our greatest success as a company is providing people the ability to love both their work and their life outside of work. As a result, we truly believe that we have the greatest people of any company around.

Trey - Area Director in FL

I love working with N2 because it has become a family business. My wife actually does ad management for about 4-6 publications throughout the U.S., and that gives us the opportunity to work from home and raise our daughter from home. We don't have to worry about daycare. And that has really helped her development. She’s really ahead of the game. Her pediatrician is always impressed. A true part of that is us being at home.

Mike - Area Director in PA

I started with N2 pretty far behind the 8 ball. I was $189,000 in personal debt. This was the only thing short of bankruptcy that I could think of that could get my family out of the situation I had put us in. N2 has completely revolutionized my life. Now, we’re debt free. We have our house paid off as well. In my life, it’s no longer about the car that I drive or the house that I live in or the vacation I go on. It’s really about who I can bless.

Katie - Sales Director in LA

When people here tell you that their priorities are God, family, then work, they actually mean it. They want you to stop when it’s quitting time and be with your family. I’m a carpool mom, so every day at 3 o’clock, I’m in the carpool line. And your commissions aren’t based on quotas or what you did last year. I make what I work for. I like that I can go out and sell advertisements for a product I’m passionate about, and my sales directly affect my check.

Domenique - Legal Department

N2 operates like one big happy family... Really! From Day One, I felt welcomed and included. Everyone here genuinely cares about each other. That’s part of what makes our culture so great! When I applied to N2, I did my research. I stalked their Facebook page and their other social media pages and I knew I needed to be a part of N2! I’m thankful for an amazing company and for each and every person here at N2. I can't imagine a better place to work.

Clem - Print Department

I was originally born in Ghana, Africa. I just decided to come and build on the dream of America. I didn't have any experience in printing. I see N2 to be a place of growth and a place of learning. At N2, I'm the last person to touch the publicaitons. I proof all the magazines in order to meet the standards that consumers expect. Being the last stage, the work I put in will be a reflection of the company. For N2 to put so much trust in my hands, I deem it a great honor and a great privilege.

Karen - Technology Department

I like working with people like me. Sounds conceited, but let me elaborate. If you like to work and be around positive, hardworking, fun-loving people, then this is the place for you. The people I get the pleasure of working with love life and the challenges that come with it. N2 people are driven: not in that corporate driven way, but driven to produce exceptional work and become extraordinary people for our teams and communities. I am beyond blessed to be a part of this company!

The N2 Home Office can be summed up in one word: Electric. Anyone who walks through our doors can sense the excitement and energy.

For all our excitement, though, we make sure to keep things casual, too. Headquartered on the coast in Wilmington, NC, the casual lifestyle of beach-town living carries over into our workplace. It’s not uncommon to see team members and the C-Suite execs discussing strategy over a game of ping pong, sporting a pair of board shorts and flip flops.

But don’t let the casual nature of N2 fool you. Within each department there’s a vast array of talented personalities collectively collaborating for a common purpose. This thriving spirit of teamwork allows us to produce hundreds of unique, community-based, individualized and hyper-local publications each month in our invigorating and fast-paced office.

N2, though, is about much more than just producing awesome publications. We do love our product, but we love our people more. They are our most valuable asset. Our founders intentionally crafted a company culture that ensures a fun and healthy environment for everyone who works here: one that values personal responsibility, unity, and mutual respect for one another. N2 provides perks to promote a healthy work-life balance, including the opportunity to work remotely, have flexible hours, and enjoy lots of paid time off each year.

All of these things make the N2 Home Office a truly remarkable place to be. If you can see yourself as part of our Home Office Team, click here.

People are often curious how a print media company is not only alive but thriving in the digital age. The answer is simple: our people make a product that cannot be beat.

We create custom publications that transform places people live into places people love. Our publications give members of exclusive communities the opportunity to learn about their neighbors by reading their stories and seeing photos that are important to them.

The result: quality publications that echo the voice of the neighborhood and reflect the community itself. Throughout the nation, communities who receive an N2 publication find that they know more about their neighbors and feel connected to them in ways that are meaningful and life changing.

I have been working at N2 Publishing full-time (More than a year)

I started working with N2 Publishing in March of 2015. There were no publications in Miami at the time and it is not an easy market to work in. In 6 months I was already in print and making 5k+ in residual per month.

There are 3 major areas of the business: sales, networking and gathering content from residents, and organizing small events. N2 completely prepares you to be successful in all of the different aspects of the business. There are 2 conference calls per week with amazing leaders / speakers that address several areas of the business. There are 3 major conferences per year that require a short distance of travel, but are very beneficial for improving your skills, attitude and understanding of the business.

The first six months of working in the business are most likely going to revolve solely on sales. Once your publication is ready to go to print, you must balance sales, and networking / gathering content from residents, and organizing small events. It takes a few weeks / months to really get the hang of doing all those things at the same time, but it becomes increasingly easier the longer you are in the company. Over 800 people have been able to learn to balance these things and run a successful business. So that should tell you, that pretty much anyone can do it, if they are willing to follow the system that N2 has designed.

By August of 2016 there were 3 publications in print in the Miami market (2 of which are mine), and I was making 12k+ plus per month in residual. The hardest part of N2 is managing your emotions and the ups and downs of sales (as in any sales job), as well as keeping your activity level up (as you do not have a boss breathing down your neck and making sure you are working).

My work life balance is way better than a traditional 9-5 business. I have been able to take numerous vacations and spontaneous 3 day weekends with my family. I have 2 small children under 3 years old so although my life is quite busy, the lifestyle I can live with N2 is truly unparalleled.

If you can handle sales, and are a people person that connects well with individuals, this could be an amazing job for you.

    Pros of working at N2?

    - Support and mentoring from incredible leaders.
    - Ability to make great income working 40 or less hours per week.
    - Flexibility in schedule.
    - Owning your own business that you can sell at a later date.
    - Plenty of opportunities to move up in management.
    - N2 invests in helping their employees grow in their personal lives.

    - Must be willing to be humble and follow the N2 program, even if you think you could come up with a better system.
    - You will have to learn to manage the roller-coaster of emotions that surround a sales job that is 100% commission.
    - You will have to learn to be organized and manage several unrelated tasks at the same time.
    - You will have to learn how to have faith that if you do the work, the results will come.

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at N2 Publishing.

The first interview was by phone and consisted of basic competency questions. The interviewer was friendly and knowledgable. Later was a face-to face meeting that was more like a "getting to know you" type of interview, mostly evaluating culture.
