During the seven years that Gordon Johnson headed the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), he repeatedly saw children being removed from their home and parents, and then torn from their brothers and sisters when placed in foster homes. He was haunted by the feeling that "the child welfare system is supposed to help troubled children and families, not make situations worse."

Johnson became convinced that the separation of siblings reduced the likelihood of reunification with parents, impaired a child's ability to bond with adoptive parents, and increased the need for treatment of emotional and behavioral disorders.

Johnson left DCFS in 1990 to become President of Jane Addams Hull-House Association in Chicago. There, in 1994, he developed a new approach to foster care.

In 2000, Johnson took the components of Neighbor To Neighbor and incorporated them into a new 501(c)(3) child welfare agency, Neighbor To Family, Inc. where he served as President/CEO until his passing in 2015. Headquartered in Daytona Beach, Neighbor To Family currently serves communities in Florida, Georgia, and Maryland.

    I have been working at Neighbor To Family full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    The fact that I have been employed here for 14 years tells the story. I have co-workers that have been here even longer. Almost all of our staff have earned their 5 and 10 year plaques! Knowing that we make a difference in the lives of the children and families that we serve is the main reason we remain committed to Neighbor To Family. Another pro is the generous amount of paid time off that is included in the benefit package.

    Cons

    The only downside of working for NTF is that we have not had a raise of any kind since 2006. However, this is one of the issues when working for a non profit agency. The agency heads attempt to ease the pain of this by adding more time off.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you are doing to promote within and seek opportunities to offer raises.

    Interview began in a laid back fashion, asking me what I knew of the company, then the interviewer explained more about the company, then asked me to tell a little of myself. It was a comfortable back and forth conversation about work histories. After, the interviewer asked particular 'interview style' questions in a relaxed manner.
