I worked at New York State Department of Corrections full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay , benefits, time off, retirement, secured employment, deferred compensation plan, room for advancement, I was able to afford a home and have a family, save money and afford vacations .

    Cons

Stuck to work overtime, negative environment, you may have to work with ignorant or unethical peers. Be prepared that not all inmates are not actually inmates , they may be undercover testers checking in on your integrity.

    Advice to Management

Shake hands more often and say hello to your staff , try to remember there names .
Call or attend funerals of your employees to show you care about them so they don't feel like just a number to the state . The goal is to have your employees care and respect each other and there workplace.
