    Application

    I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at New York State Technology Enterprise Corporation (Albany, NY) in September 2013.

    Interview

    Contacted by hiring manager, invited to interview by HR manager. Company will invite you to their local headquarters, e.g., Albany, Rome, NYC. You will be interviewed by the hiring manager and a small contingent of his/her senior team. The interview will be friendly and cordial. Anticipate many questions about your experience with State government. Knowing about NY State government (through public announcements) would be very helpful. DOH is a very large customer. NYSTEC is very proud of its distinguished history and partnership with the. State, and you should research NYSTEC for a real feather in your cap. Be sure you can cite examples of how you used your skills to help your clients and if you have any community work, be prepared to speak briefly on it. NYSTEC is proud to capture the talent of State retirees and experienced professionals. They hire at all levels. Do not appear arrogant, but confident. The hiring managers are experts in their respective fields; everyone does real work at NYSTEC, and it is vital to their business to attract and retain talent that makes its reputation shine, while maintaining team spirit. It's a terrific place to work, and each hire is well-considered. Following the interview, you will be contacted by HR or the hiring manager if you are accepted. Often, another interview will be requested. Be sure to get a business card from each interviewer if possible and personally send a thank you. Be personal. Be friendly. Be professional. Be enthusiastic. Be knowledgable. There won't be any tricks or tests. You are being judged on your ability to do the job but more on your ability to please clients and fit into the organization. If you get an interview, you are already well respected by the hiring manager. Interviews are not awarded without merit. Ask questions about their clients and projects with NYS. Listen. You may also be invited to interview with a NYSTEC client, so that's where the knowledge of the State and your profession will help. Don't fake it and relax. Oh, double-check your references; these folks interview at least three professional ones and will use a third party who will be very thorough. A drug test is required. Best of luck! I really enjoyed my tenure there. Turnover is very low and they are committed (for real) to retain talent.

    Interview Questions

    • This is a small company with a strong interest in State business. The toughest questions will be about your knowledge of State business and your knowledge of NYSTEC itself. It's all publicly available. If you are a private sector employee, expect to spend extra time learning online about the public sector.   1 Answer
