I have been working at Newport News Shipbuilding full-time (More than 3 years)
The shipyard is generally pretty good at treating its employees fairly and compensating them well. The benefits have ranges allowing people to select what works for them a la carte.
Many people at the shipyard stagnate and do not advance, mostly due to poor supervision. Apprentices are given preference in all hiring and promotional decisions, and outsiders often face a long hiring process due to government regulations that the company must meet.
I applied online. I interviewed at Newport News Shipbuilding (Newport News, VA) in January 2017.
Straight forward process. Applied online, got a call back, went in for the interview and hear back with in a week and a half. Was also briefed about the company's benefits program.
