Orrick – Why Work With Us?

About Us

We focus on serving the Technology, Energy & Infrastructure and Finance sectors globally. Clients worldwide call on our teams for forward-looking commercial advice on transactions, litigation and compliance matters. We bring distinctive quality, teamwork and value to the table – and innovate in everything we do.

We’re all about being the best law firm to work for.

That means we give you real opportunities to chart the course of your career. If you join Orrick, you’ll be part of  team that feels inspired about working here – and is focused on innovating in everything that we do.

Team Stats

Our lawyers have diverse backgrounds, both personally and professionally. This is what helps us come together as a team to innovate.

You'll work in small teams

This means you’ll have more partner and client contact, and access to coaching and mentoring.

You'll have time to learn and grow

When our associates are not advising our commercial clients, they spend time on pro bono projects, firm and community leadership, developing business, and even innovating. We give bonus credit for time spent on all of this and in training.

You'll make an impact every day

Our Public Finance teams help finance affordable housing, schools and hospitals. Our Supreme Court & Appellate team took Microsoft’s privacy case to the Supreme Court and helped push Congress to enact the CLOUD Act. And our Tech Companies Group works with 20% of the U.S. unicorns, helping to bring innovative products and services to market.

You'll do pro bono work

99% of our U.S. lawyers did in 2018, ranking us #5 in the U.S. and #4 for international impact by The American Lawyer. Our dedicated pro bono counsel in the U.S. and Europe will help you find projects that inspire you.

Learning never stops

We have a curriculum of 350 courses focused on substantive legal and business skills. We believe it’s important to keep growing both professionally and personally, so we offer workshops in leadership, teamwork, and even mindfulness. And we invite leading scholars to Orrick each summer through our Orrick Scholars program, to tap into the freshest legal thinking.

You'll step off the field for learning intensives

As you advance, you’ll attend academies – including a mini-MBA when you’re a senior associate. We also offer bootcamps on topics like trial skills, working with tech companies and IP.

You'll have help planning your career

We’ll match you with a mentor, and you’ll get regular input from your team with our real-time feedback app. We also offer a speaker series and newsletter dedicated to associate career planning.

You'll have the flexibility to work in ways that work for you

We offer all kinds of options, from flexible work arrangements to the industry’s leading parental leave program.

Our Agile Working options keep you on track for partnership

A third of partners promoted this year use some kind of Agile Working option and a quarter used them the year before, including dads who took primary caregiver leave and lawyers who work remotely.

For the fifth year in a row, Orrick is on Fortune’s list of the 100 best places to work.

“This record is a statement of the strategic value we place on having a modern and inclusive culture,” said Orrick Chairman Mitch Zuklie. “It’s also a reflection of the kind of collaborative and supportive environment in which we all want to work.”

In 2019, the firm continued to innovate in our workplace culture, policies and practices.

  • We enhanced the way we support new parents, now offering 16 weeks of paid leave to lawyers and staff – regardless of whether they are primary or non-primary caregivers. Birth parents continue to be eligible for another six to eight weeks of disability benefits. And new parents can take leave any time within the first 12 months after the child’s birth.

  • We expanded our “Unplug On Us” benefits to offer not only paid vacations but also “wellness dollars” gift cards to lawyers after particularly intensive periods of work.

  • In a celebration last November, we renamed our West Virginia operation the Global Operations & Innovation Center to more accurately describe what our teams there do for our clients and our firm.

  • Our lawyers contributed a record level of pro bono service (99% U.S. participation, 86% in Europe and Asia), while our lawyers and staff collaborated on 46 community service projects worldwide.

Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to select the list by conducting the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Three-quarters of a company's score is based on an in-depth employee survey. The balance focuses on an extensive 'culture audit' of each company, which includes a detailed analysis of pay and benefit programs, hiring practices, diversity efforts, internal communications, training, recognition and local community support.

    Interview

The interview was the standard process for a law firm. I met with two attorneys initially and invited back for another round to meet with other partners and associates. The interview was fairly long which is typical for a law firm. I met with some people together and others individually. They asked the typical questions of why you want to work at the firm and about my resume.
