Advice to Management
Good place to gain experience
I applied online. I interviewed at Oxford Brookes University.
Applied online for a PhD studentship, got an invite to a Skype interview soon after. Two interviewers and both were very nice. They asked questions about my previous research experience and about the science and techniques underlying the proposed PhD project. Afterwards they explained the structure of the course and explained things like that I'd have to committ a certain amount of time each week to teaching.
On 28 September 2017 Oxford Brookes University joined other universities and research institutions from across the UK in backing a pledge to support technicians. The Technician Commitment is a sector-wide initiative led by the Science Council, supported by the Gatsby Foundation to address key challenges facing technical staff working in research. The commitment was initially launched in May 2017 and signed by 36 founding signatories. At the New Scientist Live event Belinda Phipps, CEO of the Science Council announced that the number of signatories had reached 60 — representing nearly 50% of UK universities. Through the Technician Commitment, five target areas have been identified to improve and safeguard vital technical skills. The pledge will ensure greater visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians across all disciplines.
