The Good News (and the Bad News) About the Gender Pay Gap

The good news is that PayScale's report, Inside the Gender Pay Gap, reveals the gap to be smaller in 2016 than in the previous year. PayScale surveyed more than 1.8 million employees to find the difference between median earnings for men and women.

PayScale is the world leader in modern compensation software. We believe data-informed discussions about compensation benefit both employers and employees and that greater pay transparency promotes equity, engagement and employee retention. We’re disrupting the compensation industry and are looking to bring on talented professionals with diverse perspectives. We foster a playful work atmosphere where highly motivated individuals can be truly innovative. Are you bright, tenacious, and inventive? We are “Get Stuff Done” people. Smart and self-directed, employees at PayScale get lots of room to make their own decisions. We prefer to make short bets toward our long term goals and fail occasionally rather than having long, drawn-out projects that slow our evolution.

Work hard. Play hard. Go home!  We work hard and then go home at the end of the day. Some startups are proud of their late nights and long work weeks…Good for them. We are proud of the great products built, sold, and supported by PayScalers who have happy lives both inside AND outside of work.

Also... We're kind of a big deal...  Not to brag or anything, but we placed in Seattle Business Magazine's 2016 and 2017 "100 Best Companies to Work For". We were also recognized in 2017 by Puget Sound Business Journal as a "Washington's Best Workplace".

Location, Location, Location! PayScale's headquarters are located in the heart of the action in Seattle's historic Pioneer Square neighborhood. Located across the street from both CenturyLink and Safeco stadiums (Go Hawks! Go Mariners! Go Sounders!), this is a sports fan's paradise.

Get your grub on. Not everyone is a sports fan, but everybody is a food fan! From stadium dogs to seafood feasts, we are surrounded by great grub in every direction. Pyramid Brewery, Quality Athletics, Cherry Street Coffee, The Lodge, Henry's Tavern, Il Terazzo Carmine, London Plane, and Grand Central Bakery just to name a few!

Collaboration Station. We have five floors of industrial design AWESOMENESS here at PayScale. Our open-concept layout comes equipped with sitting-standing desks, chic storage ottomans, and duel-monitor setups so that you can rock individually. The workspace is nestled within teched-out conference rooms, casual conversation spaces, and comfy orange couches for all of your collaboration needs.

Get Physical. Physical, Physical. We love healthy and happy employees! That's why our offices come decked out with gym, bike storage, showers, lockers, and a clothes dryer. We even have a lunchtime running club!

Game on! We are a playful group of professionals! Our HQ comes equipped with shuffleboard, ping pong, foosball, Pop-A-Shot, board games galore, and (of course) an arsenal of nerf guns and foam ammo.

Sunday Funday! We are in prime tailgate real estate and open our commons area (complete with fridges, dishwashers, microwaves, keg taps, and 4 giant flat-screens) up to our employees and their guests to watch the Seahawks dominate the field. GO HAWKS! LEGION OF BOOM!

***Not located in Seattle? We have offices in Denver, CO,  Cary, NC and Louisville, KY!***

In principle and practice, PayScale is powered by people. We acknowledge our differences as well as our combined strengths. We know creating an environment that values diverse perspectives and backgrounds is what enables us to have more innovative ideas and best serve our customers.

Current Initiatives:

To know if you’re making progress, you have to know where you started. We’re focusing first on a quarterly inclusion sentiment survey so we can get a benchmark and see how different inclusion initiatives are impacting how people are feeling in terms of inclusion/belonging. The first survey went out in early 2018 and we’re working to broaden the scope of the survey a bit to ensure it’s providing actionable insights before running the next round.

Championship Program:

PayScale launched a pilot mentor/champion program to experiment with helping interested mentees and mentors connect and learn from one another. We’re also participating in a study, led by Artemis Connection, around mentorship/championship to better understand how these types of programs can best benefit participants and the organizations for which they work. We have moved this out of pilot stage and it is now an ongoing program here at PayScale. If you’d like to know more, follow up w/ the People team.

To ensure every PayScale team member feels comfortable bringing their unique talents and perspectives to the table, we all have to be open to differing opinions/approaches and be willing to step outside of our “norm.” So much of that revolves around better understanding and communication between team members. To that end, we partnered with Diana Falchuk consulting to launch a diversity and inclusion education program here at PayScale. We started with the executive team, People team, the IDEA task force and people managers in 2018 and hope to roll out more broadly in 2019.

    Positive Outlook
    Approves of CEO

I have been working at PayScale full-time (More than 3 years)

    * lots of talented and smart engineers to learn from
    * opportunities to work up and down the stack
    * hack days to explore new ideas
    * smart business model
    * since it's a compensation company, very clever about ways to compensate employees (week off July 4, pop-up shop at the office, free food, conferences). Very in tune with employee needs.
    * up to speed on cutting edge technology
    * willing to spend money on fancy tools for engineers
    * metrics driven and constantly learning about users through statistical tests
    * positive and collaborative company culture
    * earnest / ethical commitment to having accurate data and managing data properly
    * commitment to diversity (based on our own research about implicit bias, gender wage gap, etc.)

    * search engine optimization is highly competitive and it's hard to outrank some of the big players (including Google itself providing users with salary info). Also, the Google search algorithm is a constantly moving target so it's hard to feel like you have any control over it.
    * as with most companies, some level of legacy code to deal with

    Advice to Management

    * continue to cultivate such a positive and pleasant culture
    * remain committed to diversity
    * continue to find ways to lower reliance on search engine optimization

    Software Engineer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Seattle, WA
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Easy Interview

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at PayScale (Seattle, WA) in September 2013.

It started out with an email where I was asked for times that I could setup an interview. I told them in the afternoon, so that was done. Once the interview came, i was told that it was actually an Maintenance/Ops position and asked basic questions related to System Administration, which baffled me, considering the snark he displayed.

I asked a legitimate question related to some of the gaps in knowledge and he told me that Google could answer that for me. What the heck? Apparently couldn't answer my question, so googling is the best he could come up with. Why not just let me Google for your answers during the entire interview then... So much for representation of the company.

The worst experience for an interview.
