I worked at Pharo Management (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pharo is a small, boutique-like hedge fund manager that occupies a full floor in midtown with great views of Central Park. It has a nice family feel. There is no underlying sense of hierarchy meaning everyone is friends no matter what your position. They only hire the cream of the crop so you're surrounded by extremely intelligent people. The culture is very diverse with people of all ethnicities and backgrounds. They offer great benefits such as: health (about 75% covered by the company), full vision &dental about, maternity leave, generous PTO, free lunch and dinner (depending how late you work), semi-stocked kitchen for breakfast, drinks, and a few snacks (nothing crazy like some companies but still very nice), commuter benefits, gym reimbursement, company wide offsites every 3 to 4 years to places such as Africa & Iceland. The environment is very laid back with a casual dress attire and an open door policy vibe. Very minimal micro managing, if any at all, based on the team you work with.

    Cons

Since the office is small, teams can be very small which can make the work load heavy for some individuals. There can be a sense of favoritism which makes certain situations or problems that arise difficult. Their hiring process can take months sometimes and they end up losing out on some really good people. The paternity leave is very minimal which I think is odd in a majority male company. Speaking of, they could hire more females.

    Advice to Management

Since they can well afford it, please cover 100% of health insurance. It can get quite expensive for large families. Hire more females (which I think they were actually trying to do when I left). Also, put a deadline on hiring for positions so you stop wasting a lot of people's time. Offer more paternity leave. Also, with the great perks and benefits you do offer, don't make employees feel guilty when they want to take full advantage of them (or change the policy so it's more transparent). Develop a reasonable work from home policy since a lot of the positions can do their jobs remotely and sometimes issues arise where it would be very beneficial and appreciated. You should also do more to reward longevity at the company. Overall though, I think the management team is really great and are lovely to work for and with. Keep up the good work!

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took a week. I interviewed at Pharo Management in October 2018.

    Interview

I applied on Handshake and got this on campus interview opportunity. It's a group interview. Half of the interview questions are behavioral and half are technical. The interviewers are very nice and I got the result in less than one week.

    Interview Questions

    • Introduce yourself.

Some basic knowledge about derivatives (eg. options, forwards, future).

Coding experience (general question like what I've learned in my C++ course, machine learning course, etc.). No coding test.   Answer Question
