Mission: Our mission is to structure the world's medical data and make it useful for improving patient care

PicnicHealth – Why Work With Us?

Every patient has a story.

Medicine used to be a one-size fits all model. Disease X meant treatment Y. Doctors made decisions and patients listened.  Clinical trials were our only data source. But those days are over. Medicine has gotten personal.

Today, we know  that every patient has a unique medical story. The best care requires knowing those stories and the next generation of medical discovery requires compiling those stories into structured data sets.

That's why PicnicHealth works directly with patients to gather and manage complete, up-to-date medical records. That’s also why with our PicnicAI platform, we go beyond serving patients directly, and partner with the most innovative Life Sciences companies to sponsor PicnicHealth accounts for groups of research volunteers. Only by putting patients in control of their own data will we move beyond fragmented, unstructured medical records for both individual patient benefit today and for the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to tomorrow’s medicine.

We are a group of patients, data nerds, scientists, doctors, patient advocates, operators, sales people, and talent gurus who are united by our shared mission of putting patients in control of their health (records). Come join the fun!

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at PicnicHealth full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company's leaders are all brilliant, but more importantly kind, super humble. down to earth and really funny. (In fact pretty much everyone has a great sense of humor...)
The company is tackling a tough challenge that even Goliaths like Microsoft have tried (unsuccessfully) to solve. The mission unites and inspires and creates a real sense of camaraderie.
On top of this, it's a very diverse team (led by a female CEO!) with folks from all over the world and many different background. I can genuinely say that I like each and everyone of my coworkers and have a lot of fun at our events/picnics/happy hours/team workout sessions, etc.

    Cons

People work hard (also smart), sometimes very hard! Sometimes we just have to do what it takes to get it done. I haven't seen any negative culture of pressuring people to work extra long hours, but I think it's because of this that when things need to get done in a hurry, people step up and make it happen. (not exactly a con, but the only thing I can think of right now.)

    Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at PicnicHealth (San Francisco, CA) in July 2019.

    Interview

    Process-wise:

    1) Behavioral phone screen, 2) coding interview over video chat, 3) 3ish hour project (prep at home, finish on-site alongside engineering team), 4) on-site behavioral discussions

Compared to other interviews I took:
    - No tricks/gotchas.

    - Plenty of opportunity to show off what I was good at using tools I was comfortable with; this differed from other interviews where I had to come up on a very specific topic, or was constrained to a specific language, or had to go through the details of a particular math problem that the interviewer happened to be working on at the time.

    - Better communication from Picnic about what they were looking for and what they valued. This contrasted with other interviews I had where the expectations were a total black-box (and my communication with the company made the process more cryptic if anything). The Picnic interview process was totally game-free.

    - The post-interview follow up was by-far the most professional I encountered anywhere -- prompt, clear communication, a willingness to answer my questions or find others who could. More than anything else, it was the follow up that grabbed me.
