Plow & Hearth – Why Work For Us?

undefinedPlow & Hearth is a trusted national catalog, retail, and internet company specializing in unique, enduring home and lifestyle products that are quality-built and guaranteed to meet our customer's expectations.

What began as a small retail store in Madison, Virginia, in 1980 has grown to include our flagship brand, Plow & Hearth®, plus five others that have joined our family over the years. Plow & Hearth offers unique, high-quality products for home, hearth, yard and garden. Problem Solvers® provides practical solutions for everyday living. Wind & Weather® offers elegant home and garden décor, gifts, and a complete selection of indoor and outdoor weather-related instruments . HearthSong® helps parents and grandparents inspire play with age-appropriate, wholesome, quality playthings. Magic Cabin® fuels the children's imaginations with toys and crafts .Reuseit® provides practical, innovative and eco-friendly products that help eliminate disposables and help people live sustainably. The Plow & Hearth family of brands also has a growing list of retail stores.

As we have grown, we have remained dedicated to the same principles that have guided us from the beginning and to which we attribute our enduring success: honesty, integrity and most importantly, our commitment to customer service. We treat our customers like neighbors and friends. We offer only products we would use ourselves, at fair prices.

Our Community

Plow & Hearth's commitment to community involvement is reflected in the many organizations and projects supported by the company.
Plow & Hearth supports the Madison Council for the Arts by contributing time, talent and funding to Music on the Lawn, a series of free outdoor concerts providing entertainment and enjoyment to the citizens of Madison and surrounding communities during the summer months.

Other community programs include Virginia Blood Services, to which employees donate blood four times each year; the Blue Ridge Food Bank, to which employees donate food at least once a year. We also buy livestock raised by 4H youth at the Madison County fair, which are donated to the local food bank.

In 2011, we launched a partnership with American Rivers, a nonprofit organization focused on protecting and restoring our nation's rivers. Projects around the American Rivers initiative include our Water Colors art contest and our Rain Barrel contest. We also organized an associate cleanup day of our local Rivanna River, where associates on foot and in kayaks and canoes collected 4 truckloads of trash.

Our company's volunteer-run Sustainability Committee has created a Community Garden, in which associates plant and grow produce to donate to those in need. We continue to develop additional green policies to make our work space more environmentally friendly.

Plow & Hearth is very involved in the Tour deMadison Bike Ride. Initiated by our company's founder, the ride promotes fitness and community involvement. It has grown to hundreds of riders from across the region; many associates participate each year.

In 2003, Plow & Hearth received the Madison Chamber Award, in recognition of our contribution to economic growth and stability and our commitment to improving the quality of life in Madison and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

I worked at Plow & Hearth part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Meet nice people, employee discount

    Cons

Outdated computer system. Pushed to sell
“wrap ups”, no matter how well you do it’s never enough or good enough, disjointed company-nothing seems to connect together correctly, bathroom breaks are used against you,

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your employees, don’t continuously ask for more all the time, value what your employees do, ask supervisors to step down for one day and do the job of the people they supervisor for 8 hours-it’s not so easy! Get your orders out quicker- you’re competing with amazon! Package your products better-too much breakage

    Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Plow & Hearth (Madison, VA) in March 2011.

    Interview

I answered an ad in the newspaper. I sent a paper letter with resume and created a gallery of relevant imagery for them to review (portfolio). I then had phone interview and then in-person group interview.
