Postmates – Why Work For Us?

What's Postmates?

Postmates is transforming the way local goods move around a city by enabling anyone to get any product delivered in under one hour. Postmates' revolutionary urban logistics & on-demand delivery platform connects customers with local couriers, who purchase and deliver goods from any restaurant or store in a city.

Our Team

Postmates is built by a passionate team of engineers, designers, operations and growth specialists, and is headquartered in San Francisco. The company was co-founded by Sam StreetSean Plaice and Bastian Lehmann in 2011.

Investors include Spark Capital, Founders Fund, Matrix Partners, Scott Banister, Naval Ravikant, Russel Simmons, Thomas Korte, Shervin Pishevar, Dave Morin and David Sacks.

EVERYONE'S FAVORITE DELIVERY SERVICE

A Postmate is like a friend who can stop by a restaurant or store and pick up anything you need. Customers use the Postmates app to place a delivery order from any restaurant or store in the city. They are then matched with a Postmates courier, who heads to the restaurant or store, makes the purchase, and then delivers the food or goods. All in less than an hour.

The Environment

Postmates offers an environment where you will make a fundamental impact on the success of the company each and every day. We are looking for talented individuals who want to learn and grow. Each person is expected to be a dynamic member of our team, treat others with respect and communicate in a concise and articulate manner.

At Postmates we're constantly challenging ourselves to think outside the box, to break the existing rules and to show little respect for the status quo. We're fanatical about our customers needs and empowering them with technology and services that they love.

The Work

Postmates runs one of the largest real-time delivery fleets in the country. Building a software platform that is reliable, scales and stays agile under demanding product needs is a serious technical challenge. At Postmates, we engineer technologies that create an efficient and reliable platform on top of an unpredictable urban environment and fleet of independent couriers.

Dispatch: Where are the couriers located? What are their current capabilities? Where is the purchased item located? Postmates' automated dispatch determines the best courier for a delivery based on a variety of attributes in real-time.

Inventory: Where are all the #2 pencils in San Francisco? Inventories for local merchants are often unreliable or non-existent. Developing innovative strategies to harvest, manage and model the price, availability and location of products allow us to treat an entire city as our own warehouse.

Analytics: Wait times, travel times, city topologies...dozens of parameters flow into each of our transactions. In-depth analysis and visualization of every delivery is essential for fine tuning our platform.

Our work is guided by the following principles:

Design: Product experiences should not just be beautiful on the surface but thoughtfully designed to be simple and enjoyable.

Reliability: Customers will not trust an unreliable service. It is our responsibility to create robust implementations, development processes and infrastructure to provide a stable service. Code is thoroughly reviewed and tested so we can quickly and confidently make changes while minimizing risk.

Pragmatism: There is never a shortage of things to do. We emphasize identifying root causes of problems, while separating what must be done now and what should be improved later.

The Stack

Our platform runs on AWS and we make extensive use of Python, Django, Go, Postgres, Memcache, and SaltStack.  Our Android and iPhone apps are written natively and our front-end is built with Javascript, AngularJS, HTML, and CSS.  Most code is written in Python, Objective-C and Javascript.

We carefully select the tools that form our technology stack to balance our ability to quickly develop features while ensuring the stability and performance of our applications.

We do not have a QA team. We use software to test and software to automate our testing.

The Perks

Why our Engineers like working at Postmates:

  • They have lots of latitude when it comes to what they work on, and are contributors to product definition and product priorities.

  • Our urban logistics and on-demand delivery platform provides enough interesting challenges for us to need help in mobile, backend, front-end, full stack, infrastructure, and data science.

  • Knowing our technology is not mandatory.  We hire great Engineers with raw smarts and problem solving skills. Programming languages are simply tools to get the job done.

  • Small team size means lots of collaboration and room to move around the stack

  • Free lunch everyday, choose your own computer setup, free deliveries for “product testing”, monthly Lyft credits, choose your own equipment, and generous stock options.

I have been working at Postmates full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - 2018 was a huge year for Postmates. The company has landed major investments ($400MM), hired great talent, and continuously grown week over week. In a nutshell, things are really exciting right now
    - Base comp is higher than average, and healthcare benefits are amazing
    - Interesting technical problems to solve. Days aren't filled with solving mundane bugs - there are big things to be built in order to scale to our new demand
    - New and nice office with good food. I enjoy coming to work every day

    Cons

    - We don't have the holy-grail "unlimited paid time off" that many tech companies flaunt. We can work from home/remote whenever, but only get 16 official "off" days annually
    - Onboarding flow needs revisiting for new engineers. Lots of outdated/deprecated onboarding documentation, so getting started can feel overwhelming

    Community Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in San Francisco, CA
    No Offer
    Neutral Experience

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Postmates (San Francisco, CA).

    Interview

it went pretty quickly, they brought me in for multiple interviews in the office (no phone interview). they really liked me and gave me a date by which they would let me know. when this date passed, I reached out and got no response. over a week and a half after this date, they let me know they'd gone with an internal candidate. they don't have a recruiting department so the ball gets dropped as people are hiring for roles AND doing their own jobs. the company still has some sorting out to do in my opinion.
