How Procore Scaled Their Company Culture Along With the Business

Building a great company culture is hard - but maintaining that culture over the years, all the while undergoing hypergrowth, is even harder. Growing quickly often comes at the cost of losing what made your organization so great in the first place, leaving longtime employees pining for "the good old days."

Build the software that builds the world.

Like our customers, we are a team of builders; crafting and coding a platform to delight over a million users and simplify their experience. Our development team of 100+  work on the entire tech stack (from low level database operations to front end development). Our tech stack is Ruby (2.2.4) / Rails (4.2.4) / Postgres (9.4.4) - with a few microservices in Elixir, and Rust where we need to focus on high concurrency and performance. We have overhauled our front end to implement ReactJS and Redux. Our mobile apps provide access to many of Procore’s tools on iOS, Android and Windows.

To give you a better idea of what we do, vist our dev blog and read about some of our current projects here:

Live Finance: Our financials team works on budget reconciliation on live projects with budget input happening in real time all day long. If you are interested in challenges surrounding balance and ledgers, without the bureaucracy that comes with financial institutions, this is the perfect role for you.

Scalability:  We are looking at taking an existing system and scaling from 1M users to 10M users. We know Ruby and Rails can scale and we want to prove that and work with engineers who are ready to take on that challenge. This is a great chance to work on live, core systems with a million users.

Interesting Data Sets: Our insight team is focused on building an entire dash-boarding system and working with terabytes of data and users that go back over 10 years. If areas like big data mining, business intelligence and data visualizations are of interest to you, this is a great opportunity to work on those problems while seeing your work come to life and interfacing with customers.

Processing Millions of Files: We are working on building a world class document and photo file management system from the ground up. If you are interested in challenges like: pdf creation, photo management, permissions and file re visioning, this is the perfect team for you. You will get to work on the complexities that come with disassembling giant blueprint pdf’s, adding markups and call outs and writing it back so everything is unchanged.

Take ownership of your career inside an award winning organization and a high-producing sales team.   Our team of 150+ has driven over 100% growth year-over-year, with negative churn, and unbelievable employee retention. We give you everything you need to kill your numbers in fact, our reps beat plans at rates unheard of in the industry, consistently reaching 100% plus of plan.

We’re a fast growing SaaS company, looking for teammates who can throw down, without throwing elbows. We win together. That’s our bottom line.   Everyone has amenities, we have amazing. The difference? Our people, our culture, and our leadership. We don't work in cliches. You'll never hear "can't" or "impossible." What you will hear is the sound of deals closing, people celebrating, high-fives slapping, and congratulations being voiced over a buzzing bullpen.

Numbers are important. But so is having fun and working alongside great people who know how to make hard work, hardly seem like work. At Procore, we all work from one scoreboard–revenue.  We're realistic about what it takes to get each teammate into the game to become a high producing contributor. Yeah. It’s that good.

We’re building our team.Let's grow together.

I have been working at Procore Technologies full-time

    Pros

Since the first time I was contacted by a member of the recruitment team, through my interview process and on to becoming a fully paid-up employee, I have been blown away by how the people embody the Procore values of Openness, Optimism and Ownership. From a business perspective, the opportunity for Procore and its people is huge and they are doing a fantastic job on capitalizing on that (this truly is a market leading product and organization). But what really stands Procore apart is the culture and the way it invests in and treats its people. Being flown out to HQ in beautiful Santa Barbara, California for two weeks of high-quality on-boarding and training was amazing. Procore has also done a great job of bottling up the awesome culture from HQ and exporting it to London. The London office is great and has all the perks you'd expect for a leading technology/SaaS business - snacks and drinks, weekly breakfasts and lunch's paid for by the company, etc. And the best thing of all is the people and atmosphere. In summary, a great career opportunity and amazing place to be.

    Cons

No cons to speak of. But you will have to embrace the culture to succeed. It really is on the key USPs of the business, alongside the product.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing the right thing.

    Software Engineer, Backend Interview

    Positive Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Procore Technologies (Carpinteria, CA) in April 2017.

    Interview

I was contacted by Procore through Hired.com. I talked to the recruiter and she gave a lot of great information about the company and the roles and people they were looking for. After that, I spoke with a director of engineering who I would be working for. We had a talk about my experiences and why I was interested in Procore and how I had heard of them. He gave me more information about how the engineering teams are set up and what they work on. The director was really friendly and put me at ease. It gave me the impression that it's an open, friendly, and kind culture. After that, I moved on to the next step which was a remote pair programming exercise with a senior backend Rails engineer. He also immediately put me at ease so I didn't feel nervous and we worked through the problem together. I didn't really feel like I was being tested at all. Whenever I would get stuck, he never made me feel stupid but gave great suggestions. I ultimately didn't end up solving the problem but it was still really fun and he definitely made me feel reassured that I did a good job talking through the problem.

After that, I moved onto the final step, the on-site. Procore really took care of me- prepared me with lots of information beforehand like who I was going to meet, what my interview day was going to look like, paid for my flight, hotel, all travel expenses.

When I got there, I was given a tour of the campus which is stunning- ocean views, tons of happy, friendly dogs and people. The main interview process was split up into 4 interviews. The first was a panel interview where several members of different roles (frontend, QA, director, engineering manager, and senior backend engineers) were in a conference room and asked me questions about my experience based on my resume. Normally I would be extremely nervous but everyone was so friendly and kind that it felt like we were friends having a conversation. The next round was an architecture-based interview with a pair of engineers, and the round after that was an API-based interview with a pair of engineers. Neither interview involved any actual coding- it was purely discussion with the optional use of a whiteboard. The exercise was actually really fun and I enjoyed it a lot. The final round of the day was with the director where he discussed the core values of Procore and answered any final questions I had. Overall, I walked away feeling comfortable and absolutely loving the culture and people I met. What was especially unique to me was seeing so many women in high leadership positions in engineering which I hadn't seen very much in Silicon Valley and how much Procore invests in, values, and develops each of their employees.

I got an offer bright and early the morning after and accepted it! It was the best company I had interviewed for. They honestly blew the competition out of the water, no pun intended.
