Proto Labs was founded in 1999 by Larry Lukis, a successful entrepreneur and computer geek who wanted to radically reduce the time it took to get injection-molded plastic prototype parts. His solution was to automate the traditional manufacturing process by developing complex software that communicated with a network of mills and presses. As a result, plastic and metal parts could be produced in a fraction of the time it had ever taken before.
Over the next decade, we would continue to expand our injection molding envelope, introduce quick-turn CNC machining and open global facilities in Europe and Japan. In 2014, we launched industrial-grade 3D printing services to allow product developers, designers and engineers an easier path to move from early prototyping to low-volume production.
Today, Proto Labs is the world’s fastest on-demand manufacturer of custom prototypes and low-volume production parts with manufacturing facilities in seven countries.
We are leading the charge in the digital manufacturing realm, which makes us an exciting place to work. Our company hires designers, engineers, developers, creative thinkers and smart people who tackle their roles with an entrepreneurial spirit. We pride ourselves on our innovative technology & laid back culture that focuses on doing meaningful work that brings transformational products to market. If you’re up for a challenge, we’d love to hear from you!

Advice to Management
Continue to offer exceptional avenues for employee development within the organization while maintaining the core values.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took a week. I interviewed at Protolabs (Maple Plain, MN) in June 2015.
I met with three different people. The first interview was with the recruiter who was very easy to talk to. She asked pretty basic questions. Aftet that you meat with two manager for about a half hour, and I was asked to job shadow for a half hour afterwords to see if I thought the job would be something I'd like.
