RLI – Why Work For Us?

RLI is a specialty insurance company that helps customers navigate the world of insurance and risk. For half a century, we’ve been helping people and companies safeguard their assets through our innovative portfolio of property and casualty coverages and surety products. We’re not what you’d expect from an insurance company. From our products to our business model, our culture to our results — we’re different.

Our remarkable people. Our people are among the smartest and most knowledgeable in the business. They are experts at building relationships that last with our brokers and customers by providing outstanding service and creating ideal coverages with competitive premiums.

Our underwriting focus. We seek underserved niches in the marketplace and provide coverages that meet very specific needs. We eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy, give our underwriters authority and share the profits.

Our entrepreneurial culture. At RLI, we’ve created a business model that works: hire smart, ethical people, make them owners of the business, and give them the freedom to succeed. Our employees are encouraged to seek out opportunities, make things happen and do the unexpected.

Our history of financial stability allows RLI to attract the best and brightest employees to join our team of professionals. Hiring such talented individuals allows RLI to achieve results that are the envy of our industry.

Introducing the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) at RLI was an innovative decision made more than 35 years ago. We share the business profits with our employees and make them owners in the business.

Owning the business creates a sense of urgency and importance with our employees. Employees feel a sense of pride and ownership as they work to make a real difference in our success. They are challenged and empowered to profitably build our business. Those with skills, knowledge and a thirst for success excel at RLI.

This is how we’ve become known for our history of creating new opportunities, building value and developing successful businesses. In recent years, RLI has added a number of new underwriting operations. RLI Marine, RLI Re and RLI Professional Services Group are some of the examples of recent product expansion and growth efforts.

“Employees benefit from RLI’s focus on profitability as the true measure of success. Growing our businesses, increasing effectiveness and managing expenses brings profit to the bottom line. Sharing the rewards with our employees has always made sense to RLI.” Craig W. Kliethermes, President & COO

RLI’s underwriting focused business model has yielded an impressive 21 straight years of underwriting profit supported by a combined ratio 17 points below the industry average. Even more impressive — RLI has paid and increased dividends in each of the last 41 years.

Since 1991, on Ward’s 50 top-performing insurance companies — one of only three companies from more than 3,000.

We remain true to our underwriting principles and are dedicated to deep-rooted core competencies that protect our A+ ratings. RLI has a strong balance sheet and consistently delivers profits to its shareholders.

  • Rated A+ (Superior) by A.M. Best for financial strength
  • Rated A+ (Strong) by Standard and Poor’s

At RLI, we’ve created a business model that works: hire smart, ethical people, make them owners of the business, and give them the freedom to succeed. Our employees are encouraged to seek out opportunities, make things happen and do the unexpected.

We succeed because we operate differently than most insurance companies. Our business model is underwriter focused. We seek out the industry’s most experienced, talented underwriters to serve our unique niche markets. We give them the autonomy, freedom and support to create innovative solutions within the specialty lines they know best — and the opportunity to financially share in their successes.

RLI encourages professional development course work in both insurance and job-related areas for our employees. We have made a commitment to provide educational opportunities to help them enhance their skills and further their career advancement.

RLI fosters a true learning culture and encourages professional growth of employees through participation in insurance courses, in-house training and other educational programs.

    Difficult Interview

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at RLI (Philadelphia, PA) in September 2017.

interviewed with a woman, she was very rude and not engaging at all with the interview. I did not get a good vibe off of her. I have a lot of experience and been in the industry for years, she did not seem to care at all and basically rushed the interview for it to be over.
