RLI is a U.S.-based specialty insurer that offers a diverse portfolio of property and casualty insurance coverages and surety bonds. RLI’s history of innovation dates to the early 1960s, when Founder Gerald D. Stephens, recognized the expense of replacing contact lenses, and founded RLI — Replacement Lens, Inc. — a contact lens insurance agency. In 1965, he acquired the holding company that would later become RLI Corp. RLI was one of the first insurers of contact lenses. In time, it emerged as the largest insurer of its kind in the world.
Building upon this success, RLI entered the commercial property and liability insurance field and expanded into the direct writing of a commercial umbrella program. Over time, RLI has continued to diversify its product portfolio, focusing on niche and underserved insurance markets that require specialized expertise.

RLI's college internship program takes place during the summer months beginning with orientation in June and concluding in August. For some interns, their internship may continue through the year or become a stepping stone to a full-time job at RLI.
The timeline for candidate selection, interviewing and placement for RLI's internship program is January through March. RLI looks for candidates with a proven track record of professionalism and success in their academic studies.

I worked at RLI full-time (More than 10 years)
Worked for four companies prior all large players in insurance industry. This company the best by far. Great benefits and good 401k; excellent esop; good management; flexible hours for all but clerical; flat management structure with open access to decision makers; good underwriters; able to get in and out of markets rapidly.
Branch Offices feature private offices for most professional staff, but home office space is still crowded even following recent expansion and remodeling.
Advice to Management
As the company has grown so has the bureaucracy. Work harder to control this and maintain the creative spirit that is the engine of profit. The rigid time management system put in place on clerical personnel two years ago is stifling and lowering morale. Drop it!
