I worked at Rappahannock Regional Jail full-time
You get to learn a great deal about the criminal justice system. You learn how to interview and read people. You get certified in NCIC/VCIN and become a notary public. Great co-workers as well.
Salary is on the low end for new pretrial officers given that the jail is in Stafford, VA. Some of the inmates you encounter on the job are very angry and unhygienic. Small office so it is difficult to get promoted though the opportunities eventually arise.
I applied through other source. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Rappahannock Regional Jail (Stafford, VA) in July 2012.
It was a 3 person panel. Typical job interview questions were asked, nothing too difficult to handle. There was a writing exercise as well, but I think that was more to ensure you can write logically as opposed to your job knowledge. Everyone was very nice and cordial. It lasted less than an hour.
