Raven Software – Why Work For Us?

undefinedRaven Software is a market-leading and award-winning video game developer based in Middleton, Wisconsin. Since its inception in 1990, Raven's core has always been centered on visual excellence and exciting gameplay. With this focus, Raven has established a stability that few in the ever-changing video game industry have been able to achieve. As new technologies and trends continue to develop, Raven remains dedicated to surpassing new levels of quality in electronic gaming.

Founded in 1990 by brothers Brian and Steve Raffel, Raven Software has gone from a five-person company with a dream of creating a role-playing game for the Amiga, to the developer of groundbreaking titles like X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE and SINGULARITY. Since its inception, Raven Software has developed some of the most critically acclaimed games on the market.

In 1997, Raven Software joined forces with  Activision Blizzard Incorporated (Nasdaq: ATVI) in a union that merged Activision Blizzard's proven publishing and distribution resources with Raven's first-class development team. Since that time, Raven and Activision Blizzard have leveraged important strategic relationships with market leaders like id Software to produce many of the most recognizable and award-winning games on the market.

Today, Raven Software continues to define the market by developing the most ambitious real-world and science-fiction action games for the PC and next-generation gaming consoles.

It’s no secret what happens here. At Raven, we produce the highest-quality software in the gaming industry. To accomplish this end, the work is rigorous and the deadlines are exacting.

We expect our employees to be equal to the task. We’re looking for passion and excitement, for commitment and creativity. We’re looking for your sense of purpose to be matched only by your desire to create not only the best games on the market, but the games you’d most like to play. We’re looking for you to be as obsessive about success as we are.Because we’re so particular about what we want, we make it point to know what you want.

Our employees enjoy leading-edge benefits and salaries, a world-class facility in an award-winning city, a casual and team-centric environment, and the promise that we will always provide you with the tools necessary to develop the games that define the industry.

I have been working at Raven Software full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of creative freedom - the studio is flat. You create your own opportunities, and make decisions that result in great games.
Good pay and bonus opportunities - The pay scale isn't far off from the west coast Activision studios, except Raven ships yearly, so more bonus opportunities.
    World class Activision benefits.
    Big projects.

    Cons

Tight deadlines - Sometimes Raven is asked to fix emergencies in the game dev cycle that are extremely challenging.
Poor tools - CoD in general has outdated tools that are difficult to use efficiently.
Not much ownership over projects - Raven is the lead studio on CoD related projects, but mostly functions in a supporting role, therefore Raven doesn't enjoy as much creative freedom as other studios.
