Rocketship educators are tenacious. We are hungry to learn and grow in our pursuit of excellence. We are a collective of parents, teachers, and leaders working together to transform the future for students in low-income communities across our country. At Rocketship Public Schools, we are unleashing potential.
Our philosophy is based on three core beliefs about transformational schools.
EXCELLENT TEACHERS & LEADERS
Transformational teachers and leaders are at the heart of our organization and fuel our success. Teachers specialize by content area, which allows us to prepare and develop impactful learning experiences for our Rocketeers. Purposeful and personalized professional development is woven into teachers’ everyday activities in the form of intensive, customized one-on-one coaching made possible by our low teacher to school leader ratio of six to one.
Rocketship is rethinking the traditional school model to meet the unique needs of every child. With a blend of direct instruction, scaffolded practice opportunities, targeted small group instruction and adaptive online learning, our Rocketeers realize their full potential. Our focus on planning and data propels student achievement – our Rocketeers grow over 1.5 years in a single school year – setting them on the path for success in middle school, high school, college and beyond.
The power of our partnership with parents underlies our collective impact. Rocketship develops parent leaders in our schools to become lifelong advocates for their children and their community. Whether volunteering in the classroom, hosting a teacher for a home visit, organizing a field trip or meeting with elected officials to address inequities, Rocketship parents are leaders at home, at school and in their community.
The majority of our Rocketeers start with us well behind grade level. Closing academic gaps and setting our Rocketeers up for success in middle school, high school, college and beyond means we must accelerate their learning every single school year. We don’t just enroll Kinders and count on 5 years at Rocketship to realize the results we’re after. We enroll students at all grade levels every year and strive to deliver well over one year of growth for every year a student is with us.
90% of Rocketeers returned last year.
As a school of choice, the clearest demonstration of our excellence is the number of Rocketeers who choose to come back each year. Every student we serve has a seat at their zoned district school waiting for them. But they choose to come back to Rocketship. We are humbled by this remarkable vote of confidence and work relentlessly to deliver on the promise our families see in our schools every single year. I have been working at Rocketship Public Schools full-time
All the people I work with have huge hearts and believe deeply in Rocketship's mission. It can be really hard some times, but it pays off when you see the impact that we're having on the lives of the children that we serve.
Often extremely long work hours.
Advice to Management
Just make sure that you keep listening to teachers. We know better than anyone what's going on inside the classrooms, so it's important that our thoughts and ideas for how to improve the schools is being heard.
I applied online. I interviewed at Rocketship Public Schools (Discovery Bay, CA) in August 2017.
Email with interest in my application came within days of submitting application. It asked me to briefly respond to 4 basic questions to determine a fit for interviewing. The first interview via Videochat was uncomfortable and unprofessional. I felt the interviewer lacked basic skills & failed to steer the conversation productively. It also seemed I was interrupting a private coffee break at a stranger's house to interview for a professional position. Not impressed :/
