The Future Of Real Estate: Fintech 50 2020

For years, technology companies played at the edges of the real estate industry. Listing sites like Zillow improved the process of searching for a house while numerous commercial databases shed light on sales of office and apartment buildings. The actual transaction, however, remained largely unchanged.

There are plenty of startups that say they're making it easier to buy a home. There are fewer startups that are promising to make it easier to buy a home as an income-producing property. Among these is Roofstock, a four-year-old, Oakland, Calif.-based online marketplace where buyers and selle...

Roofstock – Why Work With Us?

At Roofstock we have fun and work hard!

 Innovation Built on Experience

The Single-Family Rental sector has stuck to the old way of doing things for far too long – it’s an industry ripe for disruption. Roofstock is leading the way.

Roofstock is the first online marketplace created exclusively for investing in leased Single-Family Rental homes that generate cash flow day one. Created by investors for investors, Roofstock provides research, analytics, and insights to evaluate and purchase independently certified properties.

Roofstock turns the old way of investing on its head, bringing transparency and efficiency to create a better way to transact. Buyers access vetted homes with current cash flow. Sellers market homes without lost income or disrupting tenants. Neighborhoods avoid signs in yards which could depress values. It’s win-win all around.

The most revolutionary aspect of the Roofstock marketplace is enabling investors to treat their real estate investments more like stock portfolios, focusing on asset allocation, rather than dealing with the hassles of researching and buying vacant homes that need to be repaired and leased. This creates significant time and cost savings for all parties.

The leadership team at Roofstock brings together some of the top players from the Single-Family Rental industry under one “roof” (pun intended), including a top principal investor, the CEO of one of the largest public Single-Family Rental companies, the leading investment banker in the space and one of the sector’s most active financiers. Add some of Silicon Valley’s top tech talent and investors, and you have Roofstock!

I have been working at Roofstock full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Roofstock has honestly been probably the best career decision I have made to date. This is for a few reasons. Transitioning from a corporate background to a startup isn't easy however RS takes the time to make sure you are comfortable and welcomed. You are truly treated like an adult here. There is hardly zero micro management because you are trusted as an employee to get your work done. You are challenged every day to become better and to break out of your comfort zone which ultimately makes you learn and grow as an employee quickly. You also feel like your voice is heard and your work is appreciated.

I truly think the management and executive team has my best interest in mind and is very transparent. They not only want to see the best for the company, but also their employees. Team members will always take time out of their day help out and answer your questions, even when they are extremely busy themselves.

RS gives you all the tools to succeed but at the end of the day, it comes down to you and making the most of the opportunity you have.

On a side note, the brand new state of the art office in Dallas makes coming into work each day enjoyable.

    Cons

With every startup there are growing pains and things are always changing. No company is perfect however, I feel that no issue small or large goes unnoticed or unaddressed. The current processes are definitely not perfect but things don't change overnight. The good thing is that this was all communicated to me from the very beginning so I knew what I was walking into.

With any job, there is a lot of hard work needed to be put in to succeed. RS is a fast paced environment that makes you think on your feet so if you don't like a challenge or constant change, it is probably not the best fit for you.

    Advice to Management

Don't lose sight of the company values and keep being open and honest. You have both a great company & great management which is very hard to come by. I think from an employee perspective, constantly getting updates on what is going on in the company helps remind us of the end goal.

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Roofstock.

    Interview

Applied online and recruiter reached out to me. Initial conversations with recruiter and hiring manager went fine. After the on-site it went downhill.

They went radio silent for 3 weeks before the recruiter surprised me with another round of interviews. Scheduling the second onsite was another two weeks of him missing scheduled meetings, not responding to emails. This was hands down the worst recruiting team I’ve dealt with.

    Interview Questions

    Reasons for Declining

Eventually got an exploding offer. Companies have exploding offers when they can’t close candidates.

They would not negotiate an additional 3% salary increase because they do not have 401k matching.

They threatened my candidacy by saying that they have a lot of options because of all the layoffs in tech right now.
