Innovation Built on Experience
The Single-Family Rental sector has stuck to the old way of doing things for far too long – it’s an industry ripe for disruption. Roofstock is leading the way.
Roofstock is the first online marketplace created exclusively for investing in leased Single-Family Rental homes that generate cash flow day one. Created by investors for investors, Roofstock provides research, analytics, and insights to evaluate and purchase independently certified properties.
Roofstock turns the old way of investing on its head, bringing transparency and efficiency to create a better way to transact. Buyers access vetted homes with current cash flow. Sellers market homes without lost income or disrupting tenants. Neighborhoods avoid signs in yards which could depress values. It’s win-win all around.
The most revolutionary aspect of the Roofstock marketplace is enabling investors to treat their real estate investments more like stock portfolios, focusing on asset allocation, rather than dealing with the hassles of researching and buying vacant homes that need to be repaired and leased. This creates significant time and cost savings for all parties.
The leadership team at Roofstock brings together some of the top players from the Single-Family Rental industry under one “roof” (pun intended), including a top principal investor, the CEO of one of the largest public Single-Family Rental companies, the leading investment banker in the space and one of the sector’s most active financiers. Add some of Silicon Valley’s top tech talent and investors, and you have Roofstock!

I have been working at Roofstock full-time (More than a year)
The executive team at Roofstock is extremely knowledgable about the space we're in. I truly enjoy my day to day work and can see the impact I've made so far in my tenure.
This has also been a very supportive environment for me to take on new challenges and try new things, even when what I try doesn't pan out. My manager is very supportive and trusts me to own and execute my projects and initiatives which is very refreshing.
I do work fairly long hours (although nothing extreme), but that's my choice. I feel supported by my manager to pay attention to work-life balance (in fact, I'm encouraged by my manager to leave earlier sometimes). I also feel very supported when I choose to utilize our flexible time off policy, my manager asks me NOT to work on vacation. I realize experiences vary from team to team/manager to manager, though.
It's an exciting time to be at the company and working with a team with very diverse experience.
The leaders are very knowledgable and have a lot of really excellent ideas about how to move forward, but this sometimes translates to a lack of focus and I think the teams feel pulled in different directions.
Additionally, I think that the overall company culture is friendly, supportive, motivating, and fun, BUT, this does seem to vary from department to department. I think there are some departments where the experience is not as positive as mine has been.
There is a renewed focus on improving cross-team collaboration, so we're taking steps, but I think this needs to be a top focus as we have a lot of cross-functional initiatives happening at any given time.
With all honesty, none of my cons are issues that hugely impact my day to day. They are things I think leadership can realistically fix, and I think that for the most part, leadership is aware and working on improving these things.
Advice to Management
Clearly communicate goals and priorities to the full team so that everyone is on the same page. Additionally, make sure to keep a strong focus on our core offerings so that we can perfect the base of our business.
Focus on making sure mid-level managers are creating a positive environment for their teams and take immediate steps to fix this if they're not.
Overall, keep doing what you're doing, I'm looking forward to what comes next!
I applied online. I interviewed at Roofstock (Oakland, CA) in June 2017.
Initial interview was a phone conversation with the VP of R&D. We had a good chat about the company, the goals of the position, and how my experience might relate. I greatly appreciated the direct contact from the hiring manager. The conversation was enjoyable. In the end, I was not a good fit for the position and was not given an offer. I agree with their decision and appreciate their timeliness and interview process.
