  • Russell Cellular, 2018 Verizon Wireless Partner of the Year, is pleased to announce the launch of a new brand identity. The development of the new branding was in collaboration with 417 Magazine, a regional publisher operating in southwest Missouri.

    According to co-founder Kym Russell, “Today we launch Russell Cellular’s first re-branding initiative, and our first updated logo in over 10 years! We are excited for the growth and expansion that we have experienced as an organization over the last few years, and we are anticipating the future success that we will achieve together. Hedgie's Hometown Heroes Program

The program "Hedgie's Hometown Heroes" is RC Team Members partnering with their customers to make a difference in the local school districts and communities that we serve every day.

We have created "Hedgie's Hometown Heroes" Pop Sockets to be sold as a fundraiser in all of our stores. These one of a kind Pop Sockets cannot be found anywhere else.

All proceeds, from these sales fund the local store to invest back into their local community through RC approved outreach projects and events.

Our Story

Russell Cellular, Inc. is an exclusive Verizon Authorized Retailer specializing in wireless communication services. Established in December of 1993, as a home based business, owner Jeff Russell began as a lone sales representative selling Alltel Wireless from the trunk of his old Dodge Omni. Formerly a turkey farmer, Jeff was intimidated by big business and large towns. His fear of cold calling caused him to develop a strong referral program with the farmers and small business owners that were his first customers. Jeff developed his sales technique and soon hired a few outside sales representatives, all of them selling from the trunks of their cars.

By the end of 1994, a customer base had been established and two retail locations were opened. Kym, Jeff’s wife and partner, began managing the home based office allowing Jeff to focus on sales, marketing and finances. The Corporate Office was moved out of the Russell’s home into a new Springfield, Missouri location, and three new rural offices were added. Russell Cellular was recognized as Alltel’s top selling agent. Additional administration staff were hired, and a sales manager was brought in to focus on the rapidly growing sales force.

Sales continued to soar, and Jeff Russell was awarded the 1998 Small Business Association Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Kansas City District. Russell Cellular continued into 2002 with their first acquisition of a long standing competitor in Springfield, Missouri. Several new locations were added as Russell Cellular expanded into new markets. The Springfield Business Journal named Russell Cellular as the area’s fastest growing company of 2004. 2007 and 2008 were record breaking years in sales as the company continued to grow into new states, including an acquisition of an 18-store company in Ohio.

In 2008, the Alltel Wireless and Verizon Wireless merger was announced. This merger created a daunting task for Russell Cellular: converting over 100 Alltel stores to Verizon stores in a matter of months. At the same time, the company was completing construction on a brand new Corporate Office in Battlefield, Missouri, just a few miles south of Springfield. By December 2009, 16 years after the company was founded, all stores were converted to Verizon and the new headquarters facility was opened in Battlefield. The organization’s success was again recognized with the Springfield Business Journal’s 2010 “Dynamic Dozen” award, as the fastest growing company in Southwest Missouri.

One of Russell Cellular’s greatest challenges has been to respond to the pressures of the wireless industry while maintaining the operation of the company in a way that is true to the foundational core values of the organization. In 2012, the company’s leadership team focused on creating a more positive Customer Experience and Employee Experience, adding a Vision Statement and implementing the three pillars of Employee Experience: Opportunity, Value, and Team.

Russell Cellular celebrated their 20-year anniversary in December 2013. This 20-year milestone was followed by a year of exponential growth and record-breaking sales, including 6 consecutive months of record sales from July 2014 through December 2014. In 2015, the organization continued its pattern of growth into new states and Verizon markets. The fall of 2015 ushered in the acquisition of stores in the northeastern U.S. Stores in New York City, and locations in central Pennsylvania, marked Russell Cellular’s easterly expansion, and its first growth into major metropolitan markets.

2017 began with Russell Cellular’s entrance into Verizon’s “Big 6”, the retailer program for the six largest Verizon Authorized Retailers in the U.S. This recognition provided the company with the opportunity for accelerated growth in new markets, including the organization’s first locations in California. By the first quarter of 2018, Russell Cellular maintained over 400 stores in 30 states. The company’s future includes continued growth of same store sales, as well as new locations that strengthen the company’s nationwide partnership with Verizon. Regardless of the changes the company may experience, Russell Cellular will always strive to maintain its core values and founding principles that helped drive their success for nearly 25 years.

Wireless retailer announces $8M new headquarters in Springfield, MO region, 135 new jobs

After two decades of growth based in the Springfield region, wireless communication services company Russell Cellular is expanding again. The exclusive Verizon Authorized Retailer has announced plans to build a new 40,000 sq. ft. corporate headquarters facility in Battlefield, MO, and create 135 new jobs with above-average wages over the next five years.

As one of the nation’s largest Verizon retailers, Russell Cellular has experienced significant growth in recent years, now operating over 400 stores across 30 states and employing more than 1,700 people. The company will be expanding from 15,000 sq. ft. of leased space to its new headquarters in Wilson Creek Marketplace, bringing payroll, HR, IT, inventory, and other back office operations under one roof. The company has partnered with hdesigngroup of Springfield to design the new facility.

“Russell Cellular is dedicated to continuing to base our organization in the greater Springfield area. Our roots are in this region, with nearly 25 years of conducting business in the local community. We are excited about this evolution for our company, and we appreciate the partnerships that are helping us grow to the next level,” said Jeff Russell, CEO and owner. 

Chamber economic development staff worked with company leaders as they narrowed down possible locations for the expansion, and helped the company access state incentives from the Missouri Department of Economic Development. Along with our partners at Greene County and the City of Battlefield, we also connected Russell Cellular to various community resources to ensure the company’s capital investment and job creation remained in the Springfield region.

"We know that nationally, the majority of all new jobs are created by existing businesses in a community, and Russell Cellular's expansion is a great example of that," said Ryan Mooney, the Chamber's senior vice president of economic development. "We know they could decide to grow in lots of different places in their expanding territory, but we applaud their decision to create these kinds of high-wage jobs right here in our region. We will continue to focus on creating a vibrant community that makes headquarters operations like this possible here."

“Taking care of our existing businesses is essential to the continued growth of our state,” said Governor Mike Parson. “It’s great to see a Missouri company like Russell Cellular add 135 new jobs and continuing to grow, invest, and expand their headquarters in Battlefield.”
