S&P Global Platts – Why Work For Us?

Scope

From an original focus on the oil industry, we now cover agriculture, biofuels, coal, electric power, LNG, metals, natural gas, nuclear power, petrochemicals, renewables and shipping. Today, Platts is widely recognized as the world’s most respected provider of commodity information and intelligence.

Products and Services

Platts publishes news, commentary, market data and analysis, and thousands of daily price assessments. These are widely used as benchmarks in both physical and futures markets. We deliver real-time news and price information and end-of-day price data to clients’ desktops; publish more than 60 newsletters and reports; and run over 60 conferences every year. We host high-profile industry events to announce our rankings of the Top 250 Energy Companies and the winners of the Platts Global Energy Awards, which is considered the “Oscars” of the energy industry, and the Platts Global Metals Awards.

In addition, Platts serves customers through two business lines that operate under their own well-established brand names: The Steel Index (TSI), a price information specialist which compiles indexes through the collection of transaction data from industry participants, and Bentek Energy®, a specialist in natural gas, NGLs, crude oil, and LNG fundamental market data analysis.

Clients

Traders, analysts, risk managers, purchasing agents and other professionals at more than 10,000 public and private sector organizations in more than 180 countries benefit from Platts’ services. These organizations range from exploration companies, miners and refiners to end-users such as utilities, airlines, steel companies and auto manufacturers. They also include government agencies, financial institutions and professional service firms in law, engineering, consulting and asset management.

Global Network

Platts employs a total staff of more than 1000, and maintains a network of correspondents spanning the globe. Our news and pricing staff exceeds 600 reporters, writers and editors, and is the world’s largest independent team of journalists dedicated to the energy industry. We have offices in more than 19 key cities, including major financial centers such as London, Dubai, Singapore and Houston, and global business centers such as New York, Sao Paulo and Shanghai.

While Platts employs staff in functions that range from marketing and conference planning to finance and project management, Platts most frequently recruits in the two core areas that drive its business growth: Editorial, which is responsible for generating the content provided to Platts’ clients, and Sales, which initiates and develops relationships with Platts’ broad base of clientele in the energy and metals markets.

Platts’ Editorial team looks for people who have broad sets of experiences, backgrounds, and approaches. We hire people with experience as reporters, editors and business analysts to work with the global markets. In the United States, we have major news rooms in Houston, New York and Washington, D.C.

Our worldwide customer base is diverse and multi-lingual and we expect our sales force to reflect our customer demographics.

At Platts, you can be sure of joining a fast-paced, global business and playing a role in helping to bring transparency and efficiency to the world’s energy markets.

Corporate responsibility is a part of everything we do across Platts and our parent company, McGraw Hill Financial (MHFI), and aligns with our three core values of integrity, transparency and fairness. Below are examples that demonstrate some of the ways we serve our communities and contribute to society:

Strengthening Communities. Our employees give back in a variety of ways, including matching gift programs, charitable events and grants focused on creating economic opportunities by providing fundamental financial knowledge and tools. Here are just some of the ways we help strengthen communities around the world:

  • We partner with Kiva, the world’s largest micro-lending site, where loans as small as $25 help alleviate global poverty and change lives. In 2013 alone, hundreds of Platts employees joined the MHFI Kiva Lending Team, making loans to entrepreneurs around the world.
  • Platts employees joined more than 300 MHFI employees globally as judges in the MHFI & SIFMA InvestWrite competition, a national writing competition challenging more than 20,000 elementary, middle and high school students each year to research and present an investment strategy demonstrating their understanding of the core concepts of the stock market.
  • In 2013, employees in New York City packed 18,000 meals for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Beyond New York, Platts employees in London and Hyderabad, India, assembled 700 essential needs kits for the homeless and taught 8,500 students the importance of environmental stewardship.

In addition to these examples, our employees also give back through mentoring programs, disaster relief giving and much more.

Helping the Environment. Our products and services give investors the ability to make better decisions based on environmental and broader sustainability considerations. Further, we measure the performance of companies that have demonstrated superiority in environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibility. We’re also supporting green initiatives in two tangible ways:

  • We have established an Environmental Finance Global Industry Focus Team to promote the global consistency and rigor of our environmental finance sector analysis. We also collaborate with key partners in the green investment community including the World Economic Forum Green Growth Action Alliance, the Climate Bonds Initiative, and the Oxford University Stranded Assets Programme.

We remain committed to corporate responsibility through our practices, products and thought leadership and look forward to our ongoing role in enabling the sustainable growth of markets and communities around the world.

Diversity at The McGraw-Hill Companies extends well beyond the traditional definition of race and gender; it's embedded in the very way we do business. Because our products and services are so diverse and global -- from credit market analysis in Hong Kong to teaching children to read in Harlem -- our customers could be anyone, anywhere. So we don't just welcome diverse employee backgrounds here -- we seek them out.

We rely on our employees to bring their unique point of view and understanding of the world and apply it to their work. By anticipating our customers' need for information, we provide people with the tools they need to succeed in life.

We are focused on the growth of our diverse workforce through recruitment efforts, internship programs, scholarships, community outreach, and special events. Our recruiters attend events such as the annual meeting of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the National Black MBA conference and we have partnerships with HBCUConnect.com and iHispano.com.

We encourage and support the rich interplay of ideas that comes from a diverse workforce. Once you become an employee at McGraw-Hill, you have the opportunity to join one of our employee resource groups where you can connect with people with shared cultural interests and backgrounds as well as interact and learn about other cultures and points of view. Many employees belong to more than one group! The benefits are deep: networking, career development, and mentoring.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion has won us recognition from Equal Opportunity magazine, HBCUConnect.com, National Association for Female Executives, and Working Mother magazine.
