Mission: To be the workers’ compensation partner of choice for agents, employers, and injured workers through unrivaled service, expertise and commitment to workplace safety.
We began as a member-owned mutual company started by the State of Minnesota and quickly grew to an industry leader in Minnesota — and eventually the Midwest.
It all started with rising costs and unpredictability in the 1970s and 1980s that caused insurers to get out of the Minnesota workers' compensation market. In 1983, pressure from businesses and insurance agents resulted in Minnesota passing legislation that created a member-owned mutual state fund that would compete with other insurers in the market.
The State of Minnesota appropriated us $5.7 million in start-up capital that we were to repay with eight percent interest as soon as we became profitable. We paid it off in 1997 — 16 years early.
SFM, then Minnesota State Workers' Compensation Mutual Insurance Company, wrote its first policy on April 1, 1984. We have grown and changed a lot since then, but some things have stayed consistent, like our emphasis on medical management, return to work, service excellence and innovation.
With the expansion into states outside of Minnesota, today we are the leading workers’ compensation insurer in the Midwest, insuring more than 20,000 policyholders.
Why we're different
There are a lot of insurers out there who handle workers' compensation, so why choose SFM? Plain and simple, because we're the experts. We are the workers' compensation insurer of choice for more than 20,000 employers in the Midwest. We are known for our customer service, focus on safety, expertise in workers' comp and better outcomes.
Where we do business
Headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota, we serve employers of all sizes and types based in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. We also provide coverage to employers with out-of-state operations in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
Safety is our passion
We are a safety company, working hard to keep employees safe and bring injured workers back to health.
Helping injured workers get their lives back is central to what we do, but it’s not the only way we serve the community. Between our own nonprofit, employee giving and corporate support we are always looking for more ways to make a positive impact on those in need.
One unique way we give back is through the SFM Foundation, a nonprofit we created to ease the burdens on families affected by workplace accidents.
A Kids' Chance affiliate
SFM Foundation is a proud affiliate of the national nonprofit organization, Kids’ Chance of America, and is also known as Kids' Chance of Minnesota and Kids' Chance of Iowa.
Our charitable giving committee plans volunteer events and fundraisers to benefit local charities. Through the committee’s events employees have helped build and paint homes, made bag lunches, helped with charity mailings, organized donation drives and silent auctions, attended galas and more to help those in need.
Day off to volunteer
To encourage our employees to be active in their communities, each employee can take one paid day off per year to volunteer.
We donate to many charities throughout the year in the communities where our employees live and our policyholders do business.
What do you look for in a job? Just a paycheck, or a place you love to work?
At SFM, we're passionate about helping injured workers get their lives back but we're equally passionate about making sure our employees feel taken care of, too. We care about you and want to help you succeed. And we want you to love what you do.
Here are some of the reasons people love working at SFM.
We care about you and make sure we provide the employee benefits you and your family need.
