I worked at SHIFT Communications full-time

    Pros

SHIFT is an amazing place to work. The culture is fun and collaborative with full transparency. There are many fun ways that teams bond together and they are able to do their best work together as a result. SHIFT values real-time feedback, which means employees constantly have the ability to learn and grow and benefit from ongoing feedback. Transparency is extremely high and employees at all levels feel like they are part of the company conversation and like they know what’s going on with other accounts, offices, and the overall company vision.

SHIFT does a great job of hiring team-oriented players who want to do their best work, help their teammates and who make it fun to come to work. Everyone does their share and team members are smart and dedicated. It’s refreshing to be surrounded by so many people who all share the same desire to move the needle in a positive way for clients. That team comradery is shown through positive results and creative work.

There is an abundance of communication between team members so that issues are dealt with immediately and the team is able to move forward in a positive way. There is also a treasure trove of resources available across the entire company through internal trainings, intranet resources on almost any topic one could think of and through great cross-office communication. People at other offices are very open to picking up the phone and brainstorming or talking through client, account or other situations so employees truly feel part of the larger SHIFT family.

PR can be “always on” but SHIFT does a nice job of setting boundaries and promoting work/life balance. SHIFT also has GREAT benefits.

    Cons

It can sometimes be challenging to take on work above one’s level even when there is a desire to do so. However, through open and continuous conversation about responsibilities, there are ways to discuss this and try to keep pushing for new challenges while still supporting the team on admin or media needs.

    Advice to Management

Keep the people-first focus that has served SHIFT well for so many years. Continue to keep the play hard, work hard culture with transparency and stick to what has made this such an inspiring place to work for so long!

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at SHIFT Communications (San Francisco, CA).

    Interview

I submitted my resume, and then received a follow-up email requesting an interview in their SF office. I was interviewed one-on-one by three different people, all of whom were very gracious in giving useful advice for getting into PR and feedback on my interview responses. Following the interview, I had to complete two writing exams, one writing a summary and one writing a press release. The office as a whole was very friendly.

    Interview Questions

    • I have given you a project that's due tomorrow. Another co-worker asks you to help them complete a project that's due today. If you accept this new project, you may not complete the one due tomorrow on time. What do you do?   1 Answer
