Sagence only hires Data Specialists. We are a firm of both Thinkers and Doers. Large generalist firms are focused on project delivery based on their products. Sagence is strategic, objective, and tool agnostic.

Passionate, Diverse, Creative, Genuine, Flexible, Hands-On, Connected

We are many things...
We are a high-energy group with a focus on producing high-quality results. We are committed to equality of opportunity, fairness, work and lifestyle balance, and mutual respect. We promote an entrepreneurial spirit by encouraging individual initiative and foster a collaborative culture and work environment that includes open communication and ongoing learning.  And finally, our founders and partners are deeply involved in our client work, which means you'll have the opportunity to work side by side with them on a daily basis.

Many people ask us, “How does a firm that has small project teams spread across multiple cities at multiple client sites build and maintain its culture and stay connected?” This is, and always will be, a priority for us. A few ways we maintain a connected culture are:

We host bi-annual company-wide meetings and events called SAGECON. Here, employees are able to re-establish personal and professional connections, receive company messages and updates, hear guest speakers, broaden their networks, learn about recent projects at Sagence, participate in training classes, and perhaps most importantly, kick back and have some fun.

Training classes enable our consultants to not only develop skills, but they also bring people together which allows them to further establish personal and professional connections and broaden their networks.

We publish an internal bi-monthly newsletter to keep everyone up to date on partner and board meetings, SAGECON events, SAGEU courses, business development opportunities, current engagement work, HR-related topics, recruiting, and a section we call SAGEQ where are employees can confidentially ask anything, and the management team will respond.

Sagence Connection is our firm's blog. The entries are written by employees from all levels within the firm. Everyone is assigned to a blogging team and either writes, collaborates, or edits at least three posts per year. This is a great way for us to stay connected to the people on the ground doing the work day in and day out. SUBSCRIBE HERE.

Our CEO, Bruce Quade, sends frequent video updates to all employees. This message relays company news, client information, and company strategy.

Sagence brings together small multi-disciplinary teams where each member has different interests and passions. Through team meetings and outings, employees develop connections on both a personal and professional level which creates and promotes a positive and healthy culture.

Our Interview Process
Take the first step toward your future with Sagence.

Our interview process allows us to get to know one another over the course of a number of phone and in-person discussions. Our Recruiters guide each candidate through various steps, providing open communication throughout the entire process.

RESUME SCREEN: Recruiting reviews all resumes received and determines if they meet the firm’s criteria based on our current recruiting targets and needs.

RECRUITER SCREEN: Via telephone, the Recruiter shares an overview of the firm, discusses the nature of our work, assesses the candidate's background, experience, and communication style, and answers any initial questions he/she may have regarding Sagence.

CONTENT SCREEN: A phone conversation or in-person interview is scheduled between a practice professional and the candidate to further assess the breadth and depth of the candidate’s skills and to provide the candidate with some additional insight on our work, our clients, and our culture.

IN-PERSON INTERVIEWS (Chicago or New York Office): Each candidate is interviewed by at least three Sagence employees at this stage, including one Partner.  The interviews include a mix of Behavioral/Content and Situational type interviews:

Behavioral/Content: The purpose of the behavioural/content interview is two-fold. The behavioural portion focuses on better understanding a candidate's past reactions and behaviours as it pertains to handling challenging situations, managing teams, interacting with clients, etc. The content portion explores the depth of the candidate's industry knowledge, their project management experience, and their fundamental consulting skills.

Situational: A "real life" business situation is presented to the candidate to assess the ways in which he/she analyzes, structures, and ultimately answers the typical questions that come up as part of the firm’s usual project work.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Ten? Fifteen? Regardless of whether you desire to become a life-long management consultant or transition into a leading industry role in the data and analytics space, Sagence will help you reach your career goals. We do this in several ways:

  1. HANDS ON, CLIENT-FACING WORK: All employees, even those at the most junior levels, will have the opportunity to interact with the client, oftentimes at the executive level, from day one.
  2. CLEAR COMPETENCIES: We have defined competencies that are a measurable and observable combination of knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors critical to successful job performance. These competencies were identified based on firm priorities and provide detailed performance guidelines regarding what it will take to advance and succeed in the firm.
  3. CONSISTENT, TIMELY FEEDBACK: Bi-monthly journals are reviewed with coaches where employees have candid discussions about recent accomplishments and goals within the competency areas. Annual reviews incorporate the journal entries to reflect on the year's accomplishments and as a means to help define future goals.
  4. TRAINING: We designed our curriculum with a foundation of essential consulting skills, technology our clients use and require, training on our most served industries, core courses where all Sagence professionals are expected to have at least a working knowledge, and specialized skills that are tailored to either a data management or data analytics path.

SAGEU courses are both internally and externally sourced. When selecting our courses, we took the following factors into consideration:

  1. Most importantly, we listen to our people.
    • You are on the ground working with the client daily. You help shape our training courses and provide valuable feedback for areas that need more attention. Our courses are designed to be flexible, meaning you take the class when it's convenient to and relevant for you.
  2. External market demand
    • Training for the sake of training is a waste of time. We only train you on the skills and tools that can be utilized with your clients and that will help you grow as a professional consultant.
  3. Firm philosophy, competencies, and career model
    • What good is it to have clear competencies if we don't provide you with the resources to help you meet expectations? We have aligned our training curriculum to our competency and career model so you'll know exactly how to get from point A to point B.

I have been working at Sagence full-time (More than 5 years)

    - Incredible number of IQ points throughout the firm, more so than any place I've worked
    - Opportunity for employees of any level to be part of entire project lifecycle, from sales through strategy and execution
    - Unique, varied projects across industries and disciplines, which is not something one can expect at larger firms
    - Partnership has significant entrepreneurial experience; opportunity to learn not only about consulting, but about building and growing businesses
    - Work environment encourages success through collaboration as opposed to negative competition

We can get a little heavy on the financial services side, though I've had the good fortune to be part of interesting projects in multiple industries.

    Average Interview

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Sagence in August 2014.

The interview process at Sagence was incredibly thorough, informed and communicative.

For some context, I'd heard about the firm through a former colleague, who had worked with a principal on some projects. My first interaction was with this principal. The conversation was relaxed, two sided and engaging; it was as much about my experience and credentials as it was about the company, their niche, and their plans for new hires.

After that initial call, I had my first chat with the in house recruiting team. Again, it was a relaxed and engaging conversation where my questions and worries had as much air time as was required. What struck me after this call, and after all of my subsequent interview rounds, was the feedback given. Later in the day after my chat with the recruiter, the principal who had been my contact reached out and let me know what I had done well on. I'd never had this happen before; it struck me then (and continues to be confirmed with my employment) that this was a firm and culture that valued communication and feedback in all things.

The formal interview process was three rounds; a phone call with a partner, a super day consisting of hour long interviews with two partners and a manager, and a final chat via phone with another partner. The sheer number of heavy hitters during the recruiting process tells you a lot about Sagence; they care about the people they onboard, and partners of all types and experiences want to make sure that people are good cultural and skills fits. As mentioned, after each round of interviews, I received calls from the recruiter and my contact (the principal) giving me progress reports, feedback, as well as insights on what would happen next. At no point did I end one of those calls without a clear understanding of what was going to happen next, whether it was an additional scheduled call, or an email confirming questions I had, etc. That clarity of process alone was reassuring.

A brief note about the super day; it was three one hour interview sessions, one on one, with one being a case study that was slowly unveiled by the partner conducting the interview. Very much unlike a McKinsey or BCG case, where materials are received before hand and deliverables are part of the interview, it was more of a conversational thought problem, with elements continually unveiling themselves as the dialogue progressed. Very fun as an intellectual exercise, and a good way to see if the candidate has the ability to ask smart questions, frame problems and understand the various components of the case.

    Interview Questions

    • Most difficult piece would have to be the case study; as I understand, it changes every time, and you don't know the premise before hand. Sagence isn't Google; they won't ask how many golf balls will fill up a 747. But they do expect hires to have an understanding of a certain industry, a certain amount of knowledge about 'data, etc.' and/or a demonstrated ability to ask smart questions and frame problems. That's the purpose of the case, and it varies according to candidates.   Answer Question
