I have been working at San Francisco Department of Public Health full-time (More than 10 years)
I provide services to the city and the people I love. Although I will never get rich working here, it is a steady, stable and satisfying career.
The bureaucracy is maddening at times...especially purchasing (try getting a PO through), HR (trying to get vacant positions filled) and upward mobility is limited. Also many supervisors have no idea how to supervise. I have had some GREAT bosses and some really bad ones.
Advice to Management
There are a lot of great people doing great work. More employee recognition.
More education/training and advancement opportunities of existing employees.
Streamline some of the paperwork.
I applied in-person. I interviewed at San Francisco Department of Public Health.
I was interviewed within a week of sending my resume and cover letter. The interview was very quick, it mostly asked about applicable experiences. There was a question that caught me off guard concerning 'reading' a person. The interviewers were very friendly! However it took 2 months to hear back
