I worked at San Francisco Public Defender as an intern (Less than a year)
As an undergraduate intern, you get all of the same experience a 1L or 2L would get--besides arguing in court, of course.
The internships are unpaid with no travel or meal stipends. Therefore, you're basically paying for the experience. But, the people are amazing to learn from.
I applied through college or university. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at San Francisco Public Defender (San Francisco, CA) in March 2011.
Fairly quick. I was the first student accepted for this internship at my college and they usually only allowed law interns. I was given a tour of the building and introduced to some staff who were very warm and accepting. I was given scenario based questions to see how I would handle things and assessing my comfortability level with possible stressful situations I could encounter.
