Sandia National Laboratories – Why Work For Us?

undefinedOur goal isn’t to increase market share or shareholder profits. Rather, we create science and technology that not only make the world safer, but can improve the everyday lives of millions of people across the globe.

It’s this potential for impact that drives Sandians to make exceptional contributions, work hard, and accept difficult—and sometimes seemingly intractable—challenges.

We ensure the US nuclear stockpile remains an effective deterrent and use our technologies to monitor compliance with international nonproliferation arms control treaties to guard against nuclear war.

And we improve quality of life in dozens of ways.

Our inventions have increased access to clean water, made it safer to transport temperature-sensitive vaccines and biopharmaceuticals, and have decreased risks at airports near solar installations. Further, our collaborations with others have resulted in improved treatments for cancer and a new drug that may eliminate one deadly childhood disease, acute lymphoblastic leukemia—and potentially other cancers as well.

It’s no wonder WIRED magazine cited Sandia as one of the five best places to follow “spectacular science” and said, “The two research campuses that make up Sandia National Laboratories both take part in an extraordinary amount of industrial science and technology development.”

I have been working at Sandia National Laboratories full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They are not kidding when SNL say they recruit "the best and brightest". ~ 70-80% with advance technical degrees and so many PhD's that no one is called "Dr.".
Great people willing to share their knowledge and actually help
    Good work-life balance with 9/80's, 4/10's, telecommuting
Two major locations: Albuquerque, NM (~ 9000 employees) and Livermore, CA (~ 1500 employees)
Easy to switch jobs and there are always internal postings
Good benefits and excellent 401k matching, better than industry

    Cons

NTESS (Honeywell) management starting May 1
    Low raises common to government
Aging workforce, many are retiring but guess that creates opportunities
More red tape and documents to be generated

    Advice to Management

Don't change the culture and realize this IS NOT a production agency like NSC (Kansas City Plant)
    Keep the benefits the same

For example: "We here at Prairie Home University are convinced that being around people who are different from us makes us more creative, more diligent, and harder working." The best candidates will measure your commitment to diversity by the way you express it. What’s more, even if current federal and state laws on diversity may, in time, come under political attack and be changed, statements lik
