I worked at Sarasota Opera full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly guest, members and co-workers. Tips are not reliable, but you start at a higher starting wage and can move up if you're there when someone happens to quit, retire or pass away. Hire up management really tries to keep this place together. They respect and listen if you have a concern or question. May choose times and dates to work.many shifts available.Good for 1st time bartender. Your basically a gloried conssesion vendor.

    Cons

Unreliable everything! Either micromanaged or undermanaged to the point where you literally can't find a manager because they intentionally scattered. Things never get finished. Management blames everything possible on everyone else wether it's patrons or co-workers. Schedule doesnt allow you enough time to get your bar set up even if you arrive early-because it wasn't properly stocked the shift before. If you aren't in the circle you don't matter. You're on the crap list of you call off even a day to a month before with enough notice because management doesn't write it down after being reminded over and again. Youre on the crap list if you can't cover someone else's shift 20 mins before the shift starts even if you try and suck up to them and have covered the other 15 times they've asked. The best is when you get called to cover and you get sent home an hour later. Can make "OK" money but then usually have to split it. Everyone knows everything about you....Probably more than you yourself know....But your working at the opera....Your basically signing up for gossip, backstabbing, and lying. Long ridiculous hours of standing and waiting for intermissions. Teamwork is a must but doing other's jobs on a daily basis is wearing. Serious lack of communication.

    Advice to Management

Employees depend on competent reliable mgmt. Don't act like kids in high school. It's aggravating, annoying and hurtful. Train your employees and not just take a tour and that's that.. It'll take less stress and work off of everyone.. Take responsibility and stop blaming others. Listen and communicate.

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Sarasota Opera (Sarasota, FL) in January 2012.

    Interview

Not much of an interview. I met two managers and spoke a little about life and got welcomed to the "team" and was told they'd be in touch for a start date and walked away. It wasn't
