Schellman & Company – Why Work With Us?

For the past 18 years, Schellman has consistently changed the landscape of compliance.  While we’re extremely proud of our successful history, we’re not resting on it.  2020 is another year of moving forward:  new service offerings, increased in-house certifications, additional benefits in our already amazing package, expanded community service initiatives, just to name a few.

Not all CPA firms are created equal and we pride ourselves on our differences.  No time-reporting, promotions only from within, the ability to contribute and be heard, and most importantly, great work-life balance.  The biggest difference?  We don’t perform any remediation or consulting.  Our pace is fast and therefore, we are not the best fit for everyone.

As we were just named one of the fastest growing CPA firms for the second year in a row (and Top 10 for growth percentage!), we are adding Senior Associates to our team.  If you’ve always thought of yourself as someone who sets themselves apart from the crowd, as someone who likes to be visible, have their contributions noted, moves quickly and likes the feeling of completion, you’re the exact type of candidate we’re searching for.  Join us for our opportunities; stay for your future.

The strength of Schellman comes from the experience of our professionals. To date, our team members have collectively completed over 10,000 projects, including more than 9,000 SOC examinations and hundreds of other compliance assessments and certifications.

Our professionals average nearly ten years of professional services experience per individual, which is very uncommon in this industry. These team members are almost exclusively the alumni of Big 4 global accounting firms and tier one technology firms. The vast majority of our personnel held supervisory positions immediately prior to joining our company.

We place significant value in the demonstrated expertise of our professionals. As a result, every project team is comprised of experts in the area of accounting, auditing, information security and controls, and business process auditing. This expertise is demonstrated by our team members’ achievement of combinations of the following certifications:

  • Certified Public Acountant (CPA)
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  • Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
  • Payment Card Industry Qualified Security Assessor (PCI QSA)
  • Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledgebase (CCSK)
  • ISO Lead Auditor (9000, 20000, 27001)

By focusing on a specific set of interrelated services, our professionals provide relevant assurance and compliance services on a constant basis. It is common for any single member of our project team to have more individual project experience than entire teams of professionals proposed by our competitors. With an average experience level that exceeds 100 previously completed projects per individual, our personnel are among the most experienced in the industry.

Schellman Opportunities

We get it-  you’ve got options.  In a sea full of IT Audit openings, how do you know which position parallels your vision and values?  At Schellman, we make it very clear what we’re all about.

We’re visible.  Do you like to be a recognized contributor, not one of a million?  We’re big on acknowledging our team for their accomplishments and it’s easier to do so when you’re not getting lost in the shuffle.

We’re impactful.  One of the best things about a firm our size is the ability to make a difference.  We want to hear your ideas and suggestions for improvement but there will not be 10 layers for you to bypass; great ideas will be implemented.  Our positions impact our clients by helping them to achieve their compliance objectives and your purpose is well-defined.

We’re challenging.  Our positions aren’t for everyone.  We move quickly, and our projects are in-depth.  You’ll be taking your skill set and knowledge to the next level and enjoy the feeling of completion- often.  We need our team to be prepared to work, flexible and excellent at time management.

We’re rewarding.  We only promote from within and offer an outstanding compensation and benefit package for your hard work.  Our travel is around 50%, we pay a bonus if you’re outside of the Monday-Thursday travel window, and you enjoy working from home when you’re not onsite with the client.

We’re empowering.  What direction do you want to take your career?  At Schellman, we leave the big decisions up to you.  Want to work on SOC, ISO, GDPR, HiTRUST?  You have the ability to choose what you specialize in; we’ll provide the guidance and support to help facilitate the next step of your professional journey.  We appreciate and reward initiative; advancement is based on performance and since we only hire experienced Associates, there is a high level of trust and autonomy in completing projects.  We give you the ability to set your goals, limited only by your own ambitions.

Schellman might not be as well-known, but we are well-liked.  We’ve been recognized in the industry as one of the top Best Small Firms to Work for by Consulting Magazine, but even more importantly, our employees have great things to say about working here.  If our values parallel what you’re looking for, we’d love to hear from you.

We've redefined the grind and our employees love having more time for family, friends, and fun.

At Schellman, we recognize that our people care about each other and their communities. We saw the opportunity to create a stronger bond between our personnel and the communities in which they live and work.  As such, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) program at Schellman was born. CSR is about demonstrating leadership through deliberate actions that support a more sustainable future for the marketplace, our people, the community and the environment.  The CSR program at Schellman is referred to as ‘SchellmanCARES’. The vision for the name was to encompass all that we were looking to accomplish with our program.  The ‘CARES’ portion is an acronym that speaks to each of the main pillars of our mission:

Charity – at Schellman we believe in generosity and helping the needy or suffering.

Advocacy – at Schellman we encourage our colleagues to support social causes that matter to them and their communities.

Restoration – at Schellman we recognize our impact on the environment and our responsibility to help reduce our footprint and restore/preserve our planet.

Education – at Schellman we have a duty to lend our professional talents and minds for the betterment of our society.

Service – at Schellman we promote volunteerism and giving back to our communities.

In 2018, the inaugural company-wide community service day took place – the Day of Giving. We are excited to continue this initiative in 2019 on May 3rd.  Here is an article about the 2018 event:

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Schellman & Company full-time (More than a year)

Aside from the ridiculously generous benefits already discussed here, there are a number of key factors that make Schellman a company I never want to leave. Schellman’s hiring process is top-notch and prospective candidates are well vetted. From the top down, my coworkers are among the best in their field and more than willing to do their part. There is a shared sense that we are all significant stakeholders in this venture. I have yet to see the red tape, bureaucracy, and drama that paralyzes many of our competitors. Our principals, president, and CEO exemplify transparency and make themselves available to employees of all levels. At Schellman, you truly have the opportunity to grow the practice with our own ideas.

Working for Schellman is a career-making move. As an employee, you are given considerable resources to expand your skillset. Managers take time each month to understand your goals and provide guidance to help you achieve them. Schellman values its employees and is willing to invest in your development. There is also a level of autonomy and trust that I have not felt elsewhere.

I cannot say enough good things about this organization to give it justice. Schellman feels like the best kept secret in this industry and I feel fortunate to work here.

There are times when clients are not ready for an engagement and, truthfully, our employees pay the price. The typical work/life balance is extremely fair, however, workloads can quickly double due to unprepared clients. This is an issue that has been communicated to top-level management and I hope a solution can be found.

    Advice to Management

What you've built is nothing short of amazing. As the company grows, continue to invest your employees as you have since the beginning.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Schellman & Company.

Since I was interviewing during the COVID-19 crisis, there was a lot of uncertainty and general anxiety about changing employment and future job prospects. Both Lori and Ryan are extremely personable and transparent. That gave me confidence that I was joining a team with my personal development and self-interest at heart.
