  • Understand it’s not a “job”, but their RESPONSIBILITY.

Corporate History

Sciton, Inc., located in Palo Alto, California, is a privately owned medical device company established in 1997 by co-founders James Hobart, Ph.D., and Daniel Negus, Ph.D., who left Coherent Medical (the largest laser company in the world at the time) to start a new laser company that was completely self-financed.

Sciton was established with a focus on long-term results and making both patients and physicians happy. Sciton’s innovation, from Erbium lasers to dual flash-lamp technology, helped to improve concerns of existing treatments by increasing efficiency, minimizing downtime, and enhancing patient results.

Sciton offers a more lucrative business opportunity with training, education, and a support team behind it. Their wide range of products solves aesthetic and medical challenges in ways that other companies cannot — all from a single platform that allows a provider to offer multiple procedures with one investment and small additional add-ons.

Today, Sciton continues to grow as a totally employee-owned company, launching results designed with both physicians and patients in mind.

I have been working at Sciton full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Culture is WORLD CLASS
    - Sciton prioritizes family
    - Leadership has a plan
    - COO is the right person for the job
    - Products are without a doubt the best in the industry

Sciton took a lot of criticism to heart last year and fixed benefits significantly. Health care for external employees used to be a challenge but is now a fantastic plan. Additionally- Sciton wants employees to have skin in the game so they have profit-sharing which is great for everyone.

    Cons

With any company in explosive growth mode, there are going to be a few growing pains. Changing and upgrading some of the older processes and systems takes time. The leadership is amazing and sensitive to that and the company culture.

    Advice to Management

Don’t pump the brakes. Full throttle towards the goals. Now is the time for Sciton!

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Sciton (Palo Alto, CA) in March 2015.

    Interview

My interview process started with an old external recruiter who had placed me years ago and an initial phone screen with the HR director. Next, I spoke with the hiring manager/Sr. Director of Marketing on the phone and was asked a series of behavioral/past experience questions before moving on to an in-person interview with the Marketing team and later, the two founders of the company. Given that this is a small privately-held company, the process can move quickly if they choose. I was able to meet and speak at length with a fair number of employees so I could ascertain the culture.

I really enjoyed the family/close-knit environment of all the employees and was especially impressed with the full vertical integration of their manufacturing process. Not many capital equipment companies can say they source parts from all over and then hand-assemble in Palo Alto! The building has also undergone improvements, with new furniture and painting in the lobby and additional external signage.
